Virgin ADSL SLOW.. surely they cant do this

I have been with virgin ADSL 8mb since april, I pay 14.99 a month. I just cant believe how slow and usless this service is just lately. Im getting speeds of 12kb/s max in the evening, (basically dial up speeds) its not much faster at night or through the day. I used to get 600kb/s at one time.

Its unusable, and they are not providing the service I am paying for. Surely something can be done. I thought it was me but eveyone is experiencing the same problem. I have rang up for my MAC code, she told me she would process it but I would still be liable for 90 odd quid for the remaining lenth of contract. She then said she would put me on a guareented 2MB stream? I dunno if this will solve the problem. I feel like cancelling my Direct debit and going somewhere else, I rather pay another 10 quid more and have BT Total unlimited broadband.

The customer services is poor to say the least. This company should not be trading. OFCOM are a waste of time, Some one there should surely be looking into this problem.

When will this end. Online gaming is impossible. I would have 20mb cable but I live in an apartment which does not have cable :(

I dunno what to do, should I wait for it to get better, it cant get worse. Or should I just cancel my DD , get my MAC and go else where and refuse to pay them, they r breaking their contract surely by not providing the service I am paying for. :S

l hope you werent expecting an unlimited connection paying only £14 a month, do you know how much is costs to provide unlimited amounts of data?

no offence but very few ppl these days know how much things cost to provide, whats more Ofcom have allowed the misleading term unlimited to be retained by ISPs when in truth there is "no" such thing as an unlimited connection without some form of traffic management, sounds tho is there is much congestion on the network which believe me l am noticing (l migrated in recently) however between here and my old ISP the speeds here are not as bad, l expected issues however l dont expect to pass unlimited data even tho l maybe a heavy user l dont pass as much data as some users..

if your a light user l apologise of the harsh words however if you guys spend hours and hours on youtube, google video, and other bandwidth intensive programs such as P2P then l dont think complaining is the right way to go at an ISP forum when considering the fact most users have little idea how much things cost.

forget BT i left BT because my speeds were less than 1meg when i was paying for 8meg when i tried to complain the indian call centre tells me to dissconect all my computer leads then reconnect them and if it's still the same ring them back, and then there tell you to do it all over again, and they will keep telling you to do this until you stop pestering them.

Gavster1.... Your story mirrors mine, joine a few months ago was initally good but just over the last few weeks same kinda speeds. I did log on at 4 am the other day and got normal 6 - 8mb speeds. Think virgin's poor financial position has started to affect bandwith, cost cutting again. I'm a light user so not a bandwith hogger all i wanna do is surf and chat at a reasonable speed!

well they are aware of issues
http://gps.virgin.net/service-announcements/status

seems they will be doing maintanance til xmas as far as l hae heard in retrospect tho in my case my connection is allot more stable than my old connection so l cant complain even if it is slowish

Lets hope its sorted soon, btw I wasn't talking about expecting unlimited connection for the money I pay, I Am simply stating the speed issues everyone is experiencing, which in my opinion is not acceptable. If there are upgrading sure, I dont mind a few days slow service but this has gone on for weeks . They reduce the cost at least for the months of slow service planned, which wasnt mentioned when I joined or them saying this was planned. Sure its costs Virgin lots of money for wholesale broadband, Its gonna cost them a lot more as everyone going to leave them and go with someone else. They may have the monopoly over cable, but when it comes to ADSL, theres lots of other companys to go with. Lets hope its sorted soon guys. Im not a heavy user, I just dont want to wait 10 minutes just to check my emails everyday. Last night I got 6 kb/s , download and 25 kb/s upload? ADSL Hummm , Asymmetric?

i suppose i'll post here and hope someone reads it. i am currently getting 600 kbps at one in the morning. This is a joke, i usually register 2-3megs, not that i use it like a gamer, it's just what you expect. You don't use 2 megs every day, but you want it there when you need it.

It's mad, i am getting cut off so many times, i can't find the cause but i bet Virgin aren't totally innocent.

i am not sure if i am stuck with Virgin, i recently (a few months ago) got a new package with the virgin media phone added after being way out of my 12 months commitment on their broadband. Can i quit? What happens if i ask for my code, do i wait forever for it?

for me the mornings seem to be better than peak times altho l find multi thread downloads go allot better..

as for the MAC code if you ask for one under Ofcom rules you should have it within 5 working days or they in breech of the terms laid out for them by the regulatory body, lm sure someone else will quote the rules better than l, lm just repeating whats been said elsewhere.

i just joined and having same probs, i have started ball rolling with offical complaint to head office before i go to ofcome, as im not paying 110 cancellation charge

I had problems with Virgin too, in my case simply not working rather than slow speeds. Either way they're clearly not keeping up their half of the deal, which exonerates you from paying for it. It's called repudiatory breach of contract.

Personally I wouldn't waste time and money on their helpline, their complaints procedure or OFCOM. I would put the complaint briefly in writing, expect no response (they don't do letters), threaten them with the small claims court, again expect no response, and then go ahead with a court claim. It's not very difficult and it will make them do something.

Don't cancel the direct debit, they will just pass the file over to debt collectors who will make your life a misery.

i just had virgin on phone:laugh: because i sent letter to head office, they gona regrade me down to 2mb to see if its more stable, not fusses on high speed as long as can play on xbox live, so given them 10 days to sort this out, if not they will release me from my contract:D
