Did anyone ever mention Virgin's DNS is useless? I am temporarily staying at a friends, who has ex-NTL broadband, and my system regularly fails to resolve hosts (including news.bbc.co.uk) on the first attempt. Wait a moment and try again and the names resolve perfectly.
If I was surfing the web, I would prob just click again and it would work, but I don't just do that, I use page scraping tools, send automated emails, and do network monitoring, and on these occasions there is no opportunity to retry manually.
These DNS servers are so slow, they are causing my lookups to timeout, and that in turn is causing my automated systems to fail. These systems work fine at my house (where we have Pipex).
I think I'll have to enter Pipex's DNS server addresses manually into my router.
