Virgin Media 30 day notice period

I recently cancelled my Virgin Media Broadband service. I had been with them for several years so was well out of the contract period. I was a cable customer, so no MAC issues to contend with - just a simple "please switch it off". Prior to contacting them I carefully read the contract which references a 5 day period, with no reference whatsoever (in the entire contract) of 30 days. I was informed by the call centre operative when I cancelled that 30 days apply & that I must write to VM's complaints department if I disagree. This is duly did only to receive a letter back which clearly demonstrates that VM do not understand their own contract. All other attempts on my part to contact a legal representative have failed. My next move is to contact Ofcom. Before I do this, has anyone else had this problem?

VM have always been 30days notice to cease but they can cease in 24hours if its a death in the family.

Used both methods in last 5 years

Thanks, can you direct me to the contract clause that states this because it isn't covered in anything that I can find that's published by VM. The wording on their on-line contract is very clear.

I signed up with NTL it was on my paper contract which i shredded after I left them, my mother had died so they closed her account immediately with 24 hours.

Hi Rembrandt,

Generally speaking nearly every ISP out there will usually have a 30 day period that is often based off their monthly billing cycle. 30 days notice is fairly standard among the big boys and it's safest to assume that this will apply to everybody. With Virgin Media you could still challenge this through the ADR complaints handlers, although it'll still take several months to resolve and won't be of any immediate use.

Now with an ADSL provider you can at least request a MAC and switch to an alternative while the remaining billing cycle works its way out or you dispute their claim, although if your line is with VM's cable service then you have little choice but to wait it out as the MAC process does not support them.

In the meantime you could try contesting their position by directly quoting the 5 day reference in an email, letter or fax - word for word. Make sure to include the date of the contract terms and their full title (i.e. for the particular package you use).
