Virgin Media M100 - 20Mb Upload!

Just for those interested, I recently asked @Mark.J about enquiring with Virgin about a boost seen on a friends M100 connection, in fact the upload which has jumped from 10Mb/s to 20Mb/s.

Virgin claimed to be running a selct trial, but I and others hope this is a sign of things to come for all.

A few things to clarify about the connection, it is a standard Hybridge Fibre Coaxial network area and not FTTP,

The connection is run on a Virgin Hub 4 but the upload connections are not yet upgraded so still connects at the same specs as the Hub 3 (4x 64QAM US Channels)

So I can't see anything special about this connection that means the increase isn't possible elsehwere (capacity available ofcourse.)

I was hoping for symmetrical (when DOCSIS 3.1 arrives, if ever), but I'd take 20mb instead of 10mb any day!

UPDATE: Virgin has now reversed the upload speed mentioned above back to 10Mb/s.

Which was a bad move for them as the customer is now out of contract and likely to move to mobile broadband.

Never say never, I mean its happened once already.... That's a fact

VM will offer symmetrical but not over HFC.

I'm not aware of any plans to increase upload past 10:1 on the HFC network. It'd require money that VM are spending overbuilding the HFC with FTTP.

Most of the HFC budget is taken up with capacity upgrades and some limited rebuilds where it's essential to continue to provide acceptable service quality.

Symmetrical would probably require extensive rebuilding of the network out in the field to change the split between upstream and downstream alongside extending the downstream past 860 MHz or 1 GHz, and even for FTTP it can't be done with the existing ONU VM are using for RFoG.
