I don't, but I haven't noticed it affecting anything (including online gaming etc.)I've noticed this hourly 'blip' which happens at 25 minutes into each hour, it almost acts like a disconnect as it takes 2-3 seconds. Do you know if there's anyway to stop VM doing the hourly check?
those spikes are very common with VM even on XGS or HFC. Hopefully other ISPs will be on nexfibre, zen etc.I don't, but I haven't noticed it affecting anything (including online gaming etc.)
They're actually every 30 minutes for me, it seems, and not as bad as 2-3 seconds.
In general, I'm pretty with the service after 2.5 months. It's currently the only option for symmetric upload in my area. Latency is 2-3ms greater than many Openreach-based providers, but it's fine. Uptime is good so far. Hoping that there will be other provider options on Nexfibre when my contract ends.

They're only Nexfibre'ing infil and new areas at the moment. I don't think any HFC customers have migrated over to XGS FTTP from Docsis yet. What happens when your area gets upgraded to FTTP on Virgin, do they allow you to take out a new agreement / upgrade your current agreement? Or do you have to wait for your contract to expire and re-negotiate?
Ah right i see. They're only Nexfibre'ing infil and new areas at the moment. I don't think any HFC customers have migrated over to XGS FTTP from Docsis yet.
I will probably be one of the first to experience this. I am on fibre converted back to coax (RfoG) for some crazy reason.........
Not sure i'd actually want to switch yet. Quite like the 360 TV box and the connection has been rock solid on Docsis / RFoG.
Any completely new estate from 2022 onwards in an existing HFC area is on RFoG in Telford now. You can tell by the wider brown wallbox with the hazard laser light warning on it. The brown boxes don't actually house the ONU now. Mine is in the house out the way of the elements.Ah right i see.
I didn't think anywhere in Telford had RFoG? I thought it was all HFC.
TBH, I am the same, I am on HFC and it has been rock solid for years, the occasional blip now and again.
The only thing i'd be interested in is the synchronous upload speed, saying that my 26mbps upload on the 250mbps package works for me fine as a day to day basis.
No core routers in Telford anymore but certainly is a POP. See https://www.virginmediabusiness.co....usiness-Wholesale-interactive-network-map.pdfI am happy with it, can't knock it. Pings are slightly up compared to my old FTTP connection but the same as my FTTC connection was. I noticed on trace routes we go straight to the Wolverhampton core / POP. Pretty sure we have a POP in Telford though. telf-core is / was definitely a thing.
That makes sense then.No core routers in Telford anymore but certainly is a POP. See https://www.virginmediabusiness.co....usiness-Wholesale-interactive-network-map.pdf
Useful for selling backhaul from the exchange to those who want it and leased lines over Openreach bearers to businesses their own network doesn't cover locally. That makes sense then.
Interesting to see Virgin Media have a presence in the Ironbridge BT exchange. Bit of a weird one that.
Nexfibre have permits approved to build in the northern part of Broseley. Not aware of any XGS/Nexfibre in Telford. Nearest to us is either Shifnal or parts of Shrewsbury.
Yeah I have seen those, which maybe explains the Virgin presence at the Ironbridge exchange.Nexfibre have permits approved to build in the northern part of Broseley.

I guess they don’t need a presence in the big Telford exchanges as all areas are in close proximity to the main POP / UBR.
It’s good to see Virgin have invested in the network here, they were awful in a lot of areas a few years back. Lots of high packet loss complaints in Wolverhampton too around that time. I always steered clear.
To bring Shrewsbury on board which is fed from Telford they had no choice I guess.
Oh right good to know, I have seen Virgin media and their contractors running new fibre all around Wellington/Shawbirch area on existing ducting, so i was assuming this is the start of the FTTP deployment.Any completely new estate from 2022 onwards in an existing HFC area is on RFoG in Telford now. Not aware of any XGS/Nexfibre in Telford. Nearest to us is either Shifnal or parts of Shrewsbury. Both of those areas are mixed HFC/RFoG and FTTP. Bridgnorth is currently in build phase on Nexfibre. The only areas with XGS are brand new build / infil areas though. The rest is on HFC/RFoG.

Yep, Shrewsbury is fed by Telford.Yeah if noticed on some of the cabinets near Shrewsbury Sports Village have "TELF" on their reference, so I assume they route somehow through the Telford PoP.
Yeah actually there are quite a few around the north of wellington and Shawbirch. But they were feeding new fibre down the old A5 (B5063) down the holyhead road by the cock hotel traffic lights, then on to Morrisons wellington and then towards the hospital, so it seemed to me like there were putting some type of new backhawl in place. But it could have been for new estates as you mentioned.Yep, Shrewsbury is fed by Telford.
In Wolverhampton the little grey VM SD1i cabinets are being deployed. We have these in my street and they house the fiber CBT's. VM generally don't put them underground like BT on new builds.
Any new developments going up in Shawbirch / Wellington?
I had quite an in depth chat with the VM guy who came to my house. He quickly realised I was clued up and said he was shocked my house wasn't on XGS. It is 'prepared' for XGS, not RFoG which is a pain for the installers. The one guy turned up and said this isn't coax is it. I said no, RFoG, he said i'm not fiber trained, I am coax only
I love VM at times.
Was it Comex or VM? I have noticed Comex have had the manholes up in St Georges and Priorslee doing the same. It is definitely fiber too. No mini SD1i's being installed though.Yeah actually there are quite a few around the north of wellington and Shawbirch. I've just done a traceroute from my HFC broadband and I also go straight to the Wolverhampton Core, there is no mention of the Telford PoP in my traceroute, but i know there used to be, they must have changed the routing at some point i assume.

Yeah it was Comex "working with Virgin Media", I guess they need to put new backhawl in so this might be the first stage, I am fine with my 250mbps HFC, I am not a gamer so ultra low latency isn't a concern to me and I get my full bandwidth no matter what time of the day i speed test. Was it Comex or VM? I have noticed Comex have had the manholes up in St Georges and Priorslee doing the same. It is definitely fiber too. No mini SD1i's being installed though.
The VM guy I spoke to said the mini grey SD1i cabs are fed by 10gig fiber back to the big nodal cabinet. I can't imagine XGS is different to that.
You're on the same core router as me, just my ping is around 8ms to wolves core.
I get about 12-13ms to BBC which is very similar to my old FAST PATH FTTC connection on TalkTalk. I used to get 6-7ms on Sky FTTP in Lawley.
Yeah Comex do all the fiber blowing, splicing and ducting work for Virgin in the Midlands. Very few of Virgin's own staff can blow fiber.Yeah it was Comex "working with Virgin Media", I guess they need to put new backhawl in so this might be the first stage, I am fine with my 250mbps HFC, I am not a gamer so ultra low latency isn't a concern to me and I get my full bandwidth no matter what time of the day i speed test.
The only thing I want is 250mbps Upload, but for the £18 a month I pay Virgin Media for Broadband and Stream box, I am not complaining!
I do see peoples horror stories with VM customer service and I can see how it happens tbh as sometimes their CS are a nightmare, it is just knowing how to get through to the right department... on the other hand their broadband is really reliable and cheap if you get the right haggle lol.
I am yepyou on 2000/2000?
