Virgin XGS pon performance

How interested are the two of you collectively in how VM's network is routed? I can explain the discrepancy but would you be especially bothered or would I be wasting my time? :D
No feel free to explain

I guess people would be interested to see how differently things route on XGS compared to HFC too.

I would also be interested thank you.
Like I say as far as I can tell based on my own traceroutes and latency it appears mine goes Shrewsbury >Birmingham

Yes please do, also interested as to what this means

I can decode your traceroute,
2nd hop 'cpc1-nrwh14' is Norwich but believe like in my case this DNS is wrong for you its most likely Leeds same as the next hop.
After Hop 3 it leaves Leeds and the next visible hop 5 is Telecity London 5 POP then it continues its journey in London to Google's server.

I find https://www.virginmediabusiness.co....usiness-Wholesale-interactive-network-map.pdf useful in decoding the VM network POP's/DC's again note that some of the DNS names are incorrect.

This is the traceroute I get to google.com for comparison:

In my case it’s Shrewsbury>Birmingham>Slough Equinix LD5 (eislou2)>onwards to google's servers in London.
Those pings are crazy good compared to HFC / RFoG.

It’s nice to see what I will get from Virgin…..one day.

Do you know anyone on one of the altnets in Shrewsbury to see how your ping compares to theirs?

Squirrel seems to be a popular ISP in Shrewsbury.

Yep I know lots of people on Full Fibre Fibre Heroes network.
Just to recap in Shrewsbury you have Virgin Media/Nexfibre, Openreach, Full Fibre Ltd aka Fibre Heroes and AirBand FTTP.
The latter is only in small pockets of Shrewsbury where as the others are live in most parts of Shrewsbury now.

Squirrel is an ISP that sells on FH network (and others).

I also have a Fibre Heroes connection directly on net with them and since the merger with BeFibre they now share the same Layer 3 network.

The other ISPs on FH such as Squirrel, IDNet, Octoplus etc all have their own Layer 3 and only use FH layer 1 and 2 network.

In Shrewsbury I know Squirrel and IDnet go direct to London and the latency to the gateway is 10ms.

That is the same for my FH connection it’s 10Ms to the gateway and 11-12ms typically to most things.

My parents BeFibre connection on the other hand routes to Manchester and has latency to the gateway of 4ms then most things then route back down to London via Manchester so 11-14ms.

Here is some traceroutes to Quad 9 first via my FH line:

1 100.66.32.1 (100.66.32.1) 10.120 ms 10.062 ms 9.988 ms

It seems the Quad9 route on the other 2x ISP's is not heading to Amsterdam for some reason?

Try being on HFC 👀 😔 … you could prob take 4ms off because I was using WiFi via my iPhone.

Tbh I don’t need anything latency sensitive beyond teams, so it’s fine… but I’ll be happy the day I get Full Fibre

Interesting that both of your Cloudflare traffic is routing to Manchester.

@chrisyyw VM routing to Quad9 is not right as it should not be going to Amsterdam but to one of their UK based servers instead like other ISPs.

I was going to say a lot of people rave about Quad9 but for us right now, it seems it would be a bad option.

I didn’t pay much attention to the routing on Cloudflare are you going to London then?

I wonder if that is something to do with us both being connected to the UBR in Telford.

For the first few days I was routing to Manchester same as you but then it changed to London and been the same since about 2-3ms higher latency does not make any real world difference just intresting.

Do you monitor the XGS connection with BQM or similar?

Virgin seem to do / have been doing early morning maintenance the last few weeks. I always seem to reconnect to CMTS 13 in Telford and my IP is definitely ‘sticky’, I have had the same IP since install day.

I had FTTP on Sky and BT in another part of Telford and rarely saw maintenance drops.

It will be interesting to see how Nexfiber is in that regard.

I monitor the connection using PRTG I did have an outage for a few mins this morning about 8am the PON was still up but lost connectivity to the gateway and internet on the VM line that’s the only outage I’ve had so far and other than that it’s been rock solid.

Thanks @nsmhd , yes I'm near Leeds. Nice to see some services (BBC, Cloudflare DNS) hosted in Manchester.
