Why am I still not receiving 20mb? I'm only receiving 10... Or how long will the upgrade take?

Are you on the Cable service (co-ax box, cable modem) or the ADSL service (router plugged into a phone line)

to be honest lve heard quite a few peeps who are supposedly getting 50meg but never reached half, in his case he lives in a heavily congested area, but the other possibility is the fact that no server you use is capable of dishing out data at such a rate.

The posters IP details suggest a cable user. As Timeless said, there could be all sorts of reasons why you might not be receiving the full 20Mbps. It could be down to the ISPs traffic management, local congestion, you might be one of the few still on their old analogue cable network instead of the newer digital one, a power issue or possibly even problems with the online servers/services that you’re testing with.

I think we’d need a little more information about your situation. Have you put this question to Virgin yet?

IP's are stored to combat against many things inc spam abuse etc, if a website didnt get your IP then it wouldn't know where to send the data you requested. Also technically the IP belongs to the ISP not the user.

All web servers, if configured to do so - and just about all are for good reasons, keep a log of every page access and the corresponding IP address requesting the page.

I'm not actually aware of legislation that requires the logs of that information to be deleted, but typically, and I can only speak for the servers I operate, logs more than a month old are junked as they take up a lot of space and are of no practical value at that stage.

The Government meanwhile wants providers to keep logs of far more than just IP addresses..

What other details do the government want forum admins to keep track of?

its not the government... all forms of webserver receive one piece of information, that would be an IP address.. an internet phone number, both the server and the user have one and they are used to communicate with each other.

now its true ISPr logs IP addresses but this is purely for spam prevention purposes. you see the forum software is able to block specific IPs and ranges should it be required, now before you say it.. its the same for every forum and pretty much every webserver logs will be kept however as someone previously stated IP addresses lead only to you ISP and only your ISP will be able to identify you specifically. however compared to what the government wants to log and IP isnt exactly the best means to identify someone personally...
