VM Transparent DNS Proxy?

I've been using SmartDNS service from Unlocator.com for a while and recently had some issues using a south african tv service. After using dnsleaktest.com with them to test it seems Virgin Media are using a transparent proxy and intercepting the DNS requests. i've only noticed in the last couple of weeks.

i can work around just by using a VPN to somewhere outside of the VM network (e.g a London based VPN), but be interesting to know if other people have noticed this recently with DNS requests?

Slightly unrelated, but has anyone else noticed that the hub 5 seems to have disappeared on VM's sales site for fttp-rfog and hfc postcodes? They only show hubs 3/4 now, used to show hub 5 for 1gig.

Ran out or too many bugs?

There’s a shortage of them again I believe. Pretty much everyone doing a QuickStart self install at the moment seems to be getting a Hub 4 for Gig1 packages. But engineer installs are still coming with refurb 5’s if they have them in their vans.

Only way you’re guaranteeing a hub 5 right now is getting onto the 2Gb packages, or you live in a XGS area (Guaranteed Hub 5X on all speeds whether 15Mb or 2Gb)

I suspect we'll be stuck with the hub 3 until they get rid of RFOG!

Whenever they have availability you can ask for an upgrade to the hub 5 and they’ll generally agree to it to be fair.

The hub 3 is already disposable. They’re still giving them out on low tier packages, but when you leave they aren’t asking for the kit back anymore and putting a zero value on it. There’s A LOT still in circulation but when they are finally gone, that’s it. There’s been no new stock for a long time already and there’s minimal refurbishment of existing hub 3’s going on anymore.

As for RFoG there’s no plans for that to go away anytime soon. That’s the only way they can offer full featured cable TV. The newly installed areas are XGS-PON and are broadband only. But for existing areas they want to keep the full range of services on offer for as long as possible. Until they reach a point (if, rather than when) they decide to ditch TV or at least improve the Stream offering, HFC and RFoG is here to stay in some places.
