Volunteers for Virgin Media / Sam Knows Trial

At Virgin Media, we believe in bringing broadband power to the people. We’re all for giving you the best service we possibly can. That’s why we’re working with SamKnows, the experts in measuring broadband performance. You can find your more about them at samknows.com.

Over the next year, we’re going to be measuring the performance of our broadband, from things like how fast your average download speeds are to how reliable our network is.

That’s where you come in. We’re looking for Virgin Broadband customers to help us with our tests. To say thanks for getting involved, you could win some fantastic prizes. We’ll tell you more about them once you’ve registered.

I suspect Samknows are doing this as a way to help them improve their existing testing methods for Ofcom, which are currently more ADSL than cable focused. In the long run it should mean a more reliable set of overall ISP performance results.

I can't help wondering why, if the prizes are so good, they aren't detailing them before you sign up.

Probably means they haven't quite finalised what the prizes are :) .

It could be a "fantastic" set of tissues.. who knows.

Or possibly:

  • Automatic opt-out of any future Phorm implementation?
  • A Mars bar
  • You get to press the button that sends Branson into space on Virgin Galactic
  • Pre-approval for a Virgin credit card, with a special introductory APR rate of 40%
  • A 5% discount voucher for Virgin wines

what the hell - i've just signed up.

So, they supply a gizmo that plugs into your router, and sends traffic speed details to Samknows via your internet connection, using bandwidth you are paying for.

Nice, isn't it? You could hit your STM limit a lot faster than you do now, and you'll wonder why your speed has suddenly dropped by 75% when you think you should have bandwidth to spare
