VOXI Chat (RCS) issue

Does anyone else have issues with Chat (RCS) with VOXI?

My mother has been having issues with receiving messages sent over Chat for quite some time now. Initially we assumed it was just a fault with her phone (Redmi Note 10 5G), but she is having exactly the same issue with her Z Flip3.

If she is on Wi-Fi, the messages just don't come through and she shows offline. As soon as she turns the Wi-Fi off and goes back onto mobile data, the messages instantly come through. But then, for a while after turning Wi-Fi back on, messages continue to work properly.

what is her broadband provider? does the issue persist with cloudflare’s warp service on?

She's with TalkTalk, but it also happens when she's at mine with Virgin, and when she's connected to WiFi at work.

I'll get her to install WARP and see if it makes any difference.

I think my grandfather also has intermittent issues with RCS as well on VOXI, but I don't know whether that's just because he has an old Honor 10 Lite.

My neighbour has a Redmi Note 10 5G on sister network talkmobile, she never seems to have an issue with messaging people - she’s on BT broadband.

Normally, I would put it down to TalkTalk being TalkTalk, but it happens at mine as well, so I doubt that's the case.

The phone was bought direct from Vodafone so I wouldn't think it's a compatibility issue. I initially just thought it was an issue with the phone because she's had other issues with it, but now she's experiencing the same issues with the Flip4 I'm not so sure

I've never heard of Chat and I'm currently on the same network, what is it?
It's the replacement for SMS (unless you use an iPhone then Apple don't think you should have it). It's basically the default for most Android to Android messages now.

If you look in the Messages app, you might see it says Chat Message rather than Text Message

Oh I see, thank you

I was with Vodafone until recently and noticed that they use their own RCS servers (I assume Voxi does the same). The experience was not as good as RCS on EE or Three, which use Google's Jibe service instead: https://jibe.google.com/

They seem to struggle more with VPNs, many of the chats had no encryption (even between RCS users), attachment sizes are lower than Google's RCS, etc. I disabled it after a while.

There used to be a way to force the Messages app to use Google's Jibe, but it no longer works. We have to use whatever the network wants us to use.

Even Google's RCS isn't as reliable as it should be, but it gets worse when we have to deal with networks that deploy their own implementation of the protocol.

You know, I never noticed they used their own servers for RCS.

I know with VOXI you don't seem to be able to send an MMS, it seems to upload it to Vodafone's servers and the recipient gets a link that expires after not too long.

By the way, we can see if we're using Google's servers inside (app) Settings » Chat features:

Yeah, I've noticed that on Smarty, but I don't remember seeing that on Voxi, but then again, I can't say I ever looked. I just assumed it was all provided by Jibe

Vodafone has been running their own RCS servers since 2014ish i think? The vodafone own brand devices have had 'Messages+' since around about then, and this is RCS based. Hence them running their own servers.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but there doesn't seem to be RCS on VOXI on iOS 18, any ideas why?
