Vpn access point help

Hi, just a question I need help with.
Long story short, I have 4gee router as no other Internet available in my area.
Our son plays xbox and has a wired access point in his room but xbox doesnt like cgnat and he kept getting kicked all the time and nat type was strict.
I installed nordvpn on laptop and connect to access point and then connected via ethernet to xbox.
Now xbox works fine via the fixed ip of the vpn.

My question is,
If I get a vpn client router and use in access point mode to replace his current wired access point will the vpn still work?

Thanks

I Know it's not the question you were asking, but before you spend more and more money on this problem, do you not happen to have signal from the Three network where you live? A lot of EE's cell sites are shared with Three, so there tends to be a lot of overlap.

The reason I ask is because Three's home broadband doesn't use CGNAT, and is also a lot cheaper than EE too.

Pairing a mobile broadband connection with a VPN is likely to be adding a lot of latency to online gaming which has the potential to really harm the experience.

Thanks for the reply, yes I totally agree but he cant play at all really without the vpn as he keeps getting kicked and has strict nat type and double nat problem.

Unfortunately theres no 3 signal here. Had bt wifi before but the lines are so bad we could only get 2mb max if it worked at all.
I know the vpn solution isnt ideal but at least he can play now and he hasnt lost connection.
If you know of any other way that would be better I'll try that.
Ee were no help as they said their 4gee is perfect for gaming but the xbox doesnt agree.

Is there Vodafone or O2 signal in your area? I'm fairly sure that neither of them use CGNAT so they should work.

I can't really be shocked by EE's response, I've seen other people post about customer service responses like that. They don't understand that EE doesn't always work for everyone.

Only outdoors but very poor with Vodafone. Did try researching this and seems only three use something other than cgnat.
Its a real struggle especially with ee marketing their mobile broadband as perfect for gaming, they wont help at all, at least with the vpn the nat type is open on xbox and he says its ok to play.
Just need to try and get rid of the laptop as hotspot but seems to be complcated with router as access point and using nord vpn unless I shell out for a flash router?

I'm fairly sure O2 doesn't. I've played a variety of video games on my O2 data (I only remember playing Splatoon 3 on my time on Lebara, was using the Vodafone WAP APN): F-ZERO 99, Splatoon 3, Splatoon 2, Splatoon, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart 7. They've all worked fine. I occasionally get disconnections, but I think that might just be changing cell towers or IPs changing.

My O2 is NAT Type 2 if that's any help 😄

Considering your outdoors signal is weak, I don't think it's worth looking at Vodafone and O2 then, very unfortunate.

I know it's ludicrously expensive but have you tried looking into Starlink?

Yes I did look at starlink but it said they use cgnat too as its too much hassle to have fixed ip address so think id end up with the same issue...cant believe gaming is harder to do than it was years ago!

I'm fairly sure you could get this to work with a Draytek router connected to the 4GEE router (potentially even using the WiFi from the 4GEE as the WAN connection).

Have a read of this:

It's a fairly complicated set of instructions but Draytek do support this so it should work.

Their routers are quite expensive but the models on the list include the 2860 which can be a few £10s second hand as people upgrade.

As for using WiFi as the WAN connection, have a read of this:

What I don't know is whether the overall performance of the system will be usable.

I don't think it will be "good" but it might be "adequate" and at least it will get the laptop out of the system.

The Draytek will (obviously) provide a wired connection to the XBox.

Even now the 2860 models are quite decent. I've had one since 2016 and I would suggest looking for a 2860ac if you can get one at a reasonable cost as the WiFi is better.

Be careful when buying a Draytek as there are models with different WiFi specs.
