VPN "box"

Those are screen shots taken from the working configuration.

Seems to work OK.. mind you I haven't got as far as port forwarding from the outside, in to my computer through both the Huawei modem and Asus router box yet. It might matter then.

How do you find that router Mark? Any good. I'm looking at the new DSL-68 variant myself.

It has a lovely looking interface all of which is actually written in English.

It's easy to set up.

It seems very performant bearing in mind it's only shifting 25ish down and 40ish up, so not that demanding.

It looks quite nice.

The wireless range (3x antennae) seems much improved over routers we have had before e.g. full or near full strength downstairs which is good going in this stone built house.

The VPN client and server features are useful (the former is what made me pick this one).

If you attach the printer to it, the performance is very, very slow and it makes scanning almost unusable - just doesn't seem to have the buffering, memory, streaming or whatever to do this well.

It has a built in iTunes server and sockets for hard drives, but I have never managed to get this to work. It seems poorly documented and others have asked the same questions.

That's just what springs to mind - if you want to know anything else just ask.

Good feedback :), thanks. I'll have the 68 series to test soon.

On OS X the hosts file can be edited with an application called "Gasmask" or manually through the terminal.
Maybe someone can help with my current problem?

On the VPN Asus router port 8080 does not seem to be reachable from the WAN/internet
I need this port to be accessible to get access to my NAS files.

I put the NAS box in the DMZ on the Astrill applet but no joy.
I don't see why I would need to change anything on the Huawei as that is just being used as a modem.

Sorry, missed this..

I'd have thought you might have to turn off the firewall options on the Huawei box.

Actually, I'm probably about to get to doing this myself to set up remote desktop access.

Might you need to:

1. Turn off the Huawei firewall
2. Set up a forwarding rule Huawei > Asus, port 8080 or a global rule - all ports
3. Set up a forwarding rule Asus > your machine on port 8080

If I get this working before you I'll let you know how.

Thanks for posting this its very helpful. How do you physically link the Huawei to the ASUS as I cant see a way to configure the Huawei ports as WAN.

You simply need a standard Ethernet cable. Plug one end into the WAN port on the ASUS box and the other into any of the standard ports (but not the WAN port) on the Huawei box.

It is the MAC address of the Asus router.

On that page, click Edit List, then Add, and it pre-fills the MAC address (or addresses, if more than one device is connected) for you to select from.

Oh, whoopee!
A dumb Plank giving those of us in what he probably thinks is the 51st state a "useful" link to "5-best-vpns-for-usa" - just what I needed to start the day.

EDIT - explanation:
If you're reading this some time later and are confused, the above was a response to a SPAM post which has now been nuked.

I couldnt decide if it was spam or genuine, I couldnt find a connection between the advertised VPN service and the review site, and the site rated several other VPNs higher; it also covered other parts of the world - ie best VPN for China etc..

Now the post by Kyogre is pure advert, complete with link to buy it.
