W98 & wireless

I recently did a repair job on my partner's PC which involved moving her HDD to another (less old) machine. She's now asking if she can get on the net thru a wireless connection. The PC is running W98, Pentium II processor, 128MB RAM + 12GB HDD.

Should I upgrade it to XP or look into getting a laptop?

I particularly like this line:

Some Internet functionality may require Internet access

XP runs very slowly with only 128Mb ram. I've seen XP run reasonably well on a PII 400Mhz with 256Mb ram.

I wouldn't put a wireless connection within one mile of Windows98, that OS is so unsecured, bug ridden and unreliable that you'd be better off finding a mugger on the street and giving them your house keys. Ok, that's an exaggeration.. sort of =).

Certainly you could do it, but you'd need at least 256MB's of RAM (512MB recommended) and as I say, it wouldn't be very secure. Regarding upgrades, WinXP probably wouldn't enjoy being on a system that old, although you might be able to get away with Windows 2000. It's not exactly modern, but is a damn site better than 98.

In all honest, if you can spare the cash, getting a faster system would be better. Computer Bargains and other places sell some so-so ex-corporate use desktop units for under £200, some with WinXP Pro pre-installed:

As for the Wireless, are you talking about using a Wireless ISP or connecting via ADSL/Cable and delivering that connection to the PC over Wi-Fi?

I think it would be the latter. I'm on broadband with IC24 using the Voyager 205 ADSL router they sent me. Presumably I'd need a new router if we go for the Wi-Fi option.

As long as you're using WPA, I don't see why using it with windows 98 should be that much of a security risk. Sure it doesn't have any system file protection and it is one of the most bug ridden and generally unstable OSes I've ever used, especailly after applying all the security patches.

Awe come on! Windows Me (Messed-up Edition) was far worse than 98.

I did have a second computer running on a WiFi connection on W98SE, without any problems, via a BT Voyager 2100 Wireless Modem / Router.

Have since changed the second computer for an Acer with XP Home, it cost £207 delivered all in... Nice computer for the money.
