What news bit? In which area's has it gone commercial? What price?

Sorry for all the questions but if this is true and its in my area I'd be so happy I may in fact die! :)

your exchange will get done before you see powerline on a commercial scale.
keep wishing bartman

How would you know? Some people's exchanges might not be ADSL enabled in 2005 or even later.

Thanks for the link. However how does that story equate to this Powerline tech going commercial? It just says some companys have released some news powerline products. It also says the same companys have had earlier powerline products out since late last year, so why would some slightly newer products mean that powerline is now commercial?

Find the full story in "the register", apparently they are going commercial in a town up in Scotland with a price tag of £25.00 to £30.00 p/m.

Seems a bit high to me when all they have to do is plug the thing into a mains supply.

Oh right, I'll have a look at the story thanks for the info.

As for price, nah doesn't seem at all expensive to me and I'd snap there hands off if they offered me even a 256k connection for £25 per month, or for £30 per month for that matter (AFAIH its more like 1mb+ anyway). AFAIK they don't just have to plug you into a power socket, they have to spend money upgrading the power exchanges for this tech. While the upgrades are supposed to be cheaper then upgrading a phone exchange for ADSL they still have to make a decent profit and £25-£30 is a competitive price for the speed they are offering so it seems great to me. Now if they could only offer it were I live. I'm not to far from Scotland :) (Newcastle).

Powerline is coming to Stonehaven

2meg for 25 quid.....a bit high.....nah!!!

Anyway, guess who lives in that "town up in Scotland".......I do!

I couldn't believe it when I read Stonehaven was to be included.
I have pre-registered via the hydro's website. When I get connected I'll be quite happy to report my findings here for those interested.

PS. I have a mate in Crieff who is already connected via powerline and he gets 1.5mbs download with ease.

Ian.

We have had this online since the interview.
powerline BB

Yo Ian J, if you got anymore info, post it up would ya?

Would be very greatful!:D

Note the bit about notch filtering interference. That means they will appease commercial users, but HF radio enthusiasts will be on a hiding to nothing :)

I suspect that Scotland was chosen for the trials because of the lower population densities. It wouldn't work in my road, we're all on the "agricultural grid" (11,000V) and we are 2 houses to a transformer.

Frankly HF radio enthusiasts can shove there HF radio's where the sun doesn't shine ;) I need broadband and I need it now! :)

LOL.

I have no doubt that Scotland was chosen for it's population density and therefore less radio signals flying around as interference - or things to interfere with!

I hope anyone lucky enough to get online with Hydro will post back here frequently to let us know how they're getting on with it - IanJ, this means you m8 ;)

I'm fortunate enough to be ADSL enabled, and have the choice of cable too if I wanted, but I'm very interested in this powerline stuff as I think it has to be the future of BB.

I don't think you have the faintest clue what a Notch filter is. Your coments certainly suggest you do not.

I live in Winchester and as i understand it they will be trialing the service here soon (awaiting confirmation). I currently have the NTL 1MB but its defiantley the upload speed that interests me with this service.

Al.

What is the upload speed?

If you have any more info please post, would be greatful!:D

As i understand it can have same upload as download, ie: 2mb/2mb
