Possible answer to registration problem

Hi,
I'm new to broadband and have spent a very frustrating week trying to register for Wanadoo broadband. Everything goes well throughout the 17 pages of the registration process ubtil the very last page when the system crashes and all my info was lost. The answer to this, for me anyway, was:- I was trying to register with the following email address danny@23ramsey.wanadoo.co.uk but every time the system crashed. When I tried to register with danny@ramsey23.wanadoo.co.uk everything worked and I am now just waiting for my line to be activated.

The problem seemed to be that Wanadoo's system does not like numbers directly after the @ symbol in the email address. Hope this helps.

Wanadoo registration

I'm glad I could be of help. There's nothing worse than thinking that everything you are doing is correct only to fall at the last hurdle. Anyway I'm just waiting for my ADSL connection to kick in so that I can surf at a reasonable speed. Keep up the good work everyone. Cheers!

I had a quick look through the thread but I don't see any mention of the post I'm about to make. Got a CD a couple of days ago.

Up to 10 times faster than dial-up.
No set-up costs.
Free modem and connection.
Easy to install.

Is this new or the norm? :)

It depends on what you mean by the ‘norm’

No set-up cost, Free modem & Connection:
It’s the normal offering from Wanadoo, plus a few other ISPs.
However, other ISPs (but not all) will charge you additional costs for a modem (if required) and set-up fee (the line activation cost).
These additional costs are payable in advance and could easily total £100 or more.

Easy to install:
Yes, from my experience of installing Wanadoo Broadband on four systems, it’s a piece of cake.
I've not installed Broadband of other ISPs, so I can't comment upon how easy or difficult they may be.

Up to 10 times faster than dial-up:
I can’t think of any ADSL Broadband ISP who doesn’t offer such a service.

There are basically 2 costs for setting up an ADSL connection - activation and modem. I think it is starting to become the norm that these are both included if you agree to take a 12 month contract (which with Freeserve you have to).

As for set up costs - um..that would be the activation and modem!

When I joined FS the supplied a CD with reasonably good instructions - just make sure you know the username and password and it shouldn't be difficult.

Thanks, plenty of info there. I'm not ready yet (major renovations to home meaning out of it for about 3 months) but I'm watching for offers and the like so as to have my homework done when ready. It seems to have come down a fair bit than a year ago, this disk says £17.99 a month. ;)

Didn't want to start a new thread as this is sort of 'new registration' related.

I registered online on the 12th May and ordered two filters (as the Wanadoo site did not make it clear that the free modem pack included them anyway).

Yesterday (26th) I called Wanadoo and after three agents and one and a half hours on hold I was told my whole order had stalled at stage one.

Stage 1: Bill customer for microfilters
Stage 2: Submit order to BT to activate Line
Stage 3: Ship modem

As a previous Anytime customer I thought they already had my billing info. The last agent advised me that my order would now proceed (without the un-needed filters) and I'd get my modem in 5 days.

Filled with confidence I called Wanadoo today (27th) to find that my order was still fouled up. So I cancelled my order and re-submitted it.

Moral: Don't trust Wanadoo to contact you if your order stalls. Call them every day until you get two solid green lights.

While prices may be lower than last year, it generally comes at a cost.
You will find many lower cost packages have either a restriction on the amount of data transferred within a given period or have a lower speed, or even a combination of both.
BT for instance, have a package that limits the data to 1Gig per month, whilst Tiscali have a package with a speed of 150k (3 times faster than dial-up).

Regarding the 512k £17.99 per month package you mentioned, although there is currently no data limit imposed on the user, Wanadoo intends to introduce a capacity limit later this year of 2Gig per month.
Once this limit is reached, it seems usage will be restricted for the remainder of the accounting month, although there will be an option of paying £12 to have the data limit lifted for the remainder of that particular month.

BT considers less than 1Gig per month is used by more than 50% of all Broadband users, and so obviously 2 Gig per month is suitable for even higher number of Broadband users
Therefore you need to carefully consider your usage requirements to ensure your chosen package fulfils your requirements.
If you are unsure of your usage pattern for data transfer, there’s a useful little program called ‘Netstat’ which will help keep track of your pattern.
It may not be the best around, but it’s free and available at:
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/nsl.htm

Many members on ISPR have strong views on Broadband packages with speed/data limits and consider such offerings be an affront to the word ‘Broadband’.
I personally disagree with them, but you may wish to consider their views on this matter.

I just received my bank statement today. Wanadoo charged me 19.98 on the 14th for the filters that fouled up my original order.

Two calls later (and another three agents, one disconected call and ages on hold) Wanadoo initially *deny* that they've charged me before they relent and promise to refund me.

Apparently my modem will arrive this Tuesday. Now i've got the measure of Wanadoo i'll not be shocked when they charge me for two broadband subscriptions.

You realise that up until the start date, you have the option of cancelling the order.
You clearly aren't impressed with Wanadoo, so you may like to consider cancelling before it's too late.

If you need any help with considering an alternative ISP (of which there are many) there are numerous members who will be only to glad to advise you.

But be warned, you'll have to cancel Wanadoo very quickly.

Edit:
Definition of 'Start Date'.....
Start Date" means the date when the Service or any part of it is first made available to you or when you first start to use the Service, whichever is the earlier; or at any other time your Service is changed in response to a request by you and accepted by Wanadoo;

I'm reluctant to cancel my order as i'm desperate for broadband and wanadoo are cheapest for a 2gb capped 512k service.

Anyway - an update.

They haven't refunded my money or sent me a modem. They have asked me to fax my bank statement to prove they have charged me 19.98. They haven't sent me a modem as BT apparently rejected the ADSL activation as the post code didn't match my telephone number (despite the post code matching my residential bill).

The billing department won't get to my case until Friday and no one is talking to me about compensation.

the billing department are the only ones who can offer compensation...

Odd thing about the PostCode and Telephone number, but if true, blame BT for that not Wanadoo...

Yes, they'll need bank statement to proove it went out and they charged you if it doesnt show up on the system, are they still using worldpay?

I doubt Wanadoo will compensate me.

Post codes are cr**. My property was re-assigned a post code 15 or so years ago but companies still use the old data. If you plug my code into postoffice.co.uk you get the correct info.

BT use my current code on my residential bill so it's annoying that the BT ADSL provisioning dept want me to use the old one.

The point is Wanadoo should have detected the activation rejection and either resolved it or contacted me.

I think its dangerous that their systems are capable of debiting customers' accounts and not recording the event.

Anyway, my daily check has revealed that, according to Wanadoo, BT have not received a line activation order. Wanadoo helpfully offered to re-submit the order and pointed out it'd take 'about 10 working days'.

Not surprisingly i've cancelled my order as Wanadoo's processes are shakier than air traffic control's.

Can anyone suggest a good 20 quid ISP?

I know it is not full 512KBps, but I signed up for Pipex Solo 150 and had my line activated no problems 2 weeks ago.

To be honest for general surfing it is fast enough for me and their is no cap on the bandwith. Got the modem and line activation for free and pay £15.99/month.

I was in between Wanadoo (as I was happy with their anytime product) and Pipex. In the end the no limit on bandwidth swung it for me.

lol - zazizam.com offer a full 512k (500) upto 10x faster service for £19.99 - no cap, no contract etc supports p2p and games consoles etc - www.zazizam.com

im impressed with unmetered net package, just coming up to the end of the 99p offer - my mates suggested it to me, after they enjoyed using their adsl successfully along with their good service... so i was told - and from what i have experienced - i agree with them

I must admit - I did look at zazizam. If I remember correctly they charge a £60+vat activation fee and you need to provide your own modem.

I think when you are deciding on a broadband supplier there is no single solution that suits everyone.

I wanted free modem and activation coupled with cheap monthly costs. I was prepared to sacrifice a bit of speed for this as my main driver was freeing up the phone line as I do spent alot of time on the net - but don't do much downloading
