Web Site Security

Every time I buy something on a web site I always log out when finished. These are mostly DVD/Book sites…all the big names. The trouble is that on most sites all I have to do is press the back button a couple of times and all my details are revealed to the world. This isn’t a problem at home but would be on a public or office machine. I don’t personally buy things this way but many people do. I have talked to many sites and they just don’t care. They either ignore me or say it isn’t a problem. I think it’s a major security problem. My on-line banking does not let this happen but the DVD/Book sites all do. Anyone can easily get some of all my credit card details and my name & address just by pressing the back button. (I use IE 7 & Vista)
Am I the only one who cares about security.

When ever I log in my bank or buy online I always log out then close the browser, reopen it if you wish to continue to surf or user a seperate tab closing this tab once you have logged out there is no way to go back to the details.

personally those who use public computers to buy stuff are stupid in my opinion.. granted websites could code better pages, however the moment they do a newer browser comes out which allows things they dont expect as caching of data gets better.

it maybe harsh to say users are stupid but anywhere public congregate on one system to go online just feels stupid, not only do you not know who looks at what you have done later but you also dont know what viruses might be lurking or what the owners have installed to keep an eye on staff.. in fact l know someone who sued his boss because he found out he was logging his usage... (tho that was only found our after he got the sack for using the internet to buy something in works time, seemed the logging software picked up his credit cards, funny thing was the boss lost the case based on the credit cards picked up by logging software lol)

"Stupid" is possibly a little harsh ("naive", maybe?), but the basic thrust of your message I would agree with. Personally I would not use any PC other than my own for *anything* financial, not even the more secure banking sites.

Given some of the messed-up machines that I've sorted out, I can't disagree with that either!

In one case, almost every time I visit the fellow (about once a month), he's managed to get some new nasty on his PC - because although he's got the message himself, and is duly cautious, his blasted thick and couldn't-care-less girlfriend will click anything that looks "interesting". If I were him, I wouldn't let her use it, but he's not prepared to cause a major row by putting his foot down, so there's not a lot that can be done.

Indeed most of the problem stems from browsers rather than websites.

I can do all sorts of things to stop tech like IE's "auto-complete" running on forms but I just find that an update or two down the road they find a way to prevent that from working and all in the name of making browsing easier.. albeit at the cost of security.

Like Kits I think the best advise is to close the browser session after you're done with it, don't use public computers to buy stuff and I'd also suggest using the privacy modes that now exist in both IE8 and Firefox. Oh and you can usually find an option to turn off features like "auto-complete".
