Weird problem with three broadband

Hi all,

So this is a weird problem and will try and explain as best as I can. I have the version 1 of the zyxel device.

Getting speeds of over 200-700mb download depends where I am in the house and about 100-160 upload. Mind you it didn’t used to be like this. It used to be around the 150mb for download but some how it’s increased over the past month. Anyways not complaining about that.

However I have noticed certain apps throwing up errors like I don’t have an internet connection. I maybe scrolling the app and then I get an error and then I have to refresh the app like scroll down again for it to rework (hot uk deals app) as an example. One or two other apps are also showing this issue.

Some website apps seem to be waiting to progress like vinted etc. But then it eventually progresses within the app to the next screen.

Strange thing is that these issues don’t occur outside the house on other WiFi connections. My browsing and surfing the net is absolutely fine like streaming etc but just certain apps seems to be playing up and I just can’t figure out why they are playing up when connected to the WiFi at home but not other places.

It’s a minor inconvenience which I can put up with but rather not put up with it. If you know what I mean when everything else is running quite good. The apps are all up to date as well. I am not at home right now so can’t check anything on the router but just don’t understand this issue. As this was never an issue before.

Another app I use is the nperf to do speed tests etc. That seems to run fine sometimes but then it just kicks up an error saying i need to restart the test. When I do the full speed test i notice the latency bit sometimes throws a few red I think it’s red or skipped options but other than that it works fine. But I don’t notice the latency issue not using a the home broadband. But the final results using this app shows all is good anyway. But I thought I throw that in here too.

Thoughts anyone?

Hi Nomader, maybe check you have the APN set to IPv4 only, might not be that, but thought I'd mention it just in case, as I've heard other users mention the IPv6 setting caused them some problems similar to what you describe. 🤷‍♂️

If it's already set to IPv4, it's not that then. 😁

Thanks wee bear. If it is that issue to do with ipv4 then do you know what could have possibly caused this issue when it was working before?

Also would changing it to ipv6 change any draw backs do you know of if I change to ipv6 and do you have a helpful guide how to change this? Sorry I am not that technical so not too sure what these terms mean.

You could try ip4 or ipv4 & ipv6, and see if anything changes, just pop it back to what it was to start with if there's no improvement.

You can find the APN settings here after you log in to the web UI........

Top right hamburger menu / network setting / broadband / cellular apn tab / modify icon. (pencil in square)

Hopefully I have that right.

Check the PDP type, this is where you can change it, then click on ok.

Sorry if it doesn't help, but might be worth a try.

Hopefully someone else can offer you another suggestion here too. :)

Best of luck my friend. (y)
Hi wee bear. So I did what you suggested. It didn’t solve the problem. It was already selected as ipv4 and ipv6 and then I selected ipv4 on its own and IPv6. I wasn’t sure if I had to restart the router when I selected the various options.

I did switch WiFi off and on, on my mobile though. Made no difference. When it comes to my banking app it’s not a case that it does not work. It’s like when I want to check my card details it says no internet and then I refresh it within the app it shows my card details.

Or if I try and transfer money from one account to another one within the app it mah say no internet but then it works on the second attempt.

I also noticed that one of my smart tvs that it’s only used for YouTube for the kids that when I load up YouTube it just freezes. So need to restart that a few times the tv for it to work. So not sure what’s going on here. But i don’t know if it’s worth calling Three about it. But as it’s minor issues I guess can put up with it.

Aw, sorry to hear it made no difference for you Nomader, thanks for popping back to let us know.

I wonder if changing the APN in the same section from 3internet to three.co.uk might do aything?

Hm I can try that. Will that impact speed of the internet do you know?
No it doesn't usually make much difference Nomader.

I find Three's DNS servers to be slow or non-responsive at times. You could try changing the DNS servers on your device to free ones such as Google's 8.8.8.8 or Cloudflare 1.1.1.1

I actually run a local cache on my network to help prevent this issue.

Changing the IPv4/IPv6 negotiation mode can't and won't make any difference because there's no IPv6 on Three's network, so you won't get IPv6 addresses/routing either way.

I just turned on IPv6, and this is the result above nate.
(Now switched back to IPv4 only again) 😊

In which case I take it back, but I'm now wondering why I've never had IPv6 from Three.
No idea nate, I've had it for months now, but always just stick to IPv4 only.:)

A lot of rural masts aren't able to delegate IPv6 ranges, but Three are still enabling it on accounts, which can cause problems.

I did have this trouble on Three - it was a particular problem on my smart speakers (Alexa) which kept dropping or saying "no internet connection". On the plus side I did find a solution which was to buy an unlimited data sim from Scancom on EE. Sorry !

Hi all just a little update. I did all of the above including changing the dns and still no results. It’s like sometime it works sometimes it doesn’t. Only certain apps seem to be affected. The rest of the apps are fine. I am wondering if my router is now faulty. Do you think it’s worth contacting 3 to ask them to send a replacement to see if that solves issue or do you think they will be a waste of time. Maybe a future update the router will fix this.

Nomader.

Our broadband now comes from Vodafone using a Lebrara card.

There are several sites I cannot use. The most important to me is WETransfer on my PC. I can only get it to work by implementing a VPN app.

On my tablet Google always invokes one of those Catcha tests - until I start a VPN.

Could this be your problem?

Hi Tony,

It’s not a catcha issue. The issue only occurs on some apps. A new app it was occurring on was a train app I use to check train times. It says I was offline when I wasn’t. Then I reloaded the app again and it worked. I am using an iPhone, the apps are up to date. Issue only seems to affecting certain apps. Hotukdeals, vinted app, nperf speed test app, ScotRail app. On the days I am working from home I have no issues using my laptop.

Don’t get me wrong the functionality of the apps work but certain things within the app for example like ScotRail trying to check live train time it kicked up a your offline message. It’s just weird how this of a sudden happened over the past month. The apps are all up to date too.
