Well i dood it

For better or for worse ive signed up to TalkTalk

Ive got my free modem and my line is active .

I'm not saying the service is faultless but i'm surfing the net and ive tried my home phone and that makes calls

Not used their email yet as first night mytalktalk site was down for need maintenance , hum heard that before.

I'm looking forward to the free evening and weekend uk landline calls upto 70 mins ( although ive bugger all to talk about for 70 mins as i'm a anti social old crouch , lol lol lol )

Here is hoping its plain sailing ...

Your initial impressions...

Hi

What are you initial impressions ?

I'm looking at the 1Mbps option with Talk 2 which will should save me a lot dosh against my current Freeserve/Wanadoo 512Kbps broadband and BT for the calls. I've requested a migration code from Wanadoo which I should get next week and would be appreciate any feedback you have.

Regards

Dave

Hi sorry for not replying earlier

Well the saga goes as follows . I'm intitialy happy with the service. But their website is crap not all functions work yet. Ive used my broadband for a few week and liked it but now having odd cut off from sagem fast 800 e2t modem . The modem drops the line connection. Sometime i can connect back on other times the modem completely ignores me or says connected but once i dial in i just get dsn error and blank page when i try to go to a site . ie talltalk.net or yahoo.co.uk .

Ive gone through .

checking power management turn off in bios , turned off in Device manager for wan adapter, turned off in device manager for usb serial bus controllers and usb hub . even bought a externl powerd usb2 hub and its still doing it.

No set time or warning just drops connection but at other times runs for hours no disconnection.

Have gone into internet options, talktalk broadband , then settings, then advanced and made sure that, disconnect if idle, not ticked.

so at moment fedup and unsure what to do . Talktalk support free first two weeks then 50p a minute for technical support. Mind you there is a e-mail address ........

following off talktalk faq on help page

Connection

Why does my connection drop out after a period of time or at regular intervals?
Your TalkTalk connection should be available for days or weeks without interruption. The broadband network will occasionally drop a connection during periods of routine maintenance, or if we experience a network problem. However, if your connection is constantly being lost every few minutes, there is most likely a configuration problem with your computer or modem / router.
If you have a connection problem, you can check that the 'Disconnect if idle' function is not enabled in your Internet browser. To do this, right click on the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop. Select 'Properties'. Click on the 'Connections' tab at the top and highlight the connection name you are using. Click 'Settings' (right hand side). Click 'Advanced' (bottom hand corner). Make sure the 'Disconnect if idle' box is not ticked. Click 'OK'.

The broadband network may also drop a connection because the power management setting on your PC is engaged. Most PC's come with power saving features, which send the PC and connected devices into a 'sleep' mode. This usually happens after a specified period of inactivity. If your PC does go into 'sleep' mode, it may cause your TalkTalk Broadband network to lose its connection. Please consult your PC user guide or vendor for information on checking these settings.

So i'm going to contact talktalk via email and see how it goes .

Well here is their reply sent on the 11/12/04 but received 12/12 /04 . reply edited of names and contact number plus tracking number .

Thank you for your email.

I would advise you look on your system and see if you have any firewall or active anti virus or security packages and try disabling these.
Also another possibility is to use the CD supplied and un-install the modem and then re-install it incase one of the drivers was copied incorrectly. Also there are updated drivers on the Sagem website for the Modem which may help your situation as it sounds like a software error on the system.

If you need any more help, please email broadbandsupport@talktalk.co.uk or call our Broadband Support team

copy ends .

So far ive reinstalled original drivers several times but it is still disconnecting as and when it feels, sometimes runs for hours, othertimes cuts after minutes or seconds .

I have done all sugested at www.usbman.com and still got problem ..

I have searched internet and loads of people got modem cutting off problems not just me on TalkTalk . Amongst the reviews over at the MadHouse people giving their opinion of the sagem fast 800 , some people say it is the radeon cards causing problem. Trouble is ive got a nvidia fx5200 128 mb , so i'm still at a loss .

I have tried sagem latest drivers but yet to get them to work ( long story , to many options and im new to broadband and adsl configuration . )

Will post if i get it resolved at moment to many options of what it might be.

I have run the following

ad-aware se

pestpatrol ver 4 removed kazza , xolox , bearshare and others

search and destroy

cool web search shredder

Webroot spy sweeper = removed startnow hijack

Avast home edition

firewall zone alarm pro

I have tried pc-cillin 2002 and pc-cillin internet security 2005

thats it for now

Two normal reasons for dropped connections usually down to incorrect filtering of phones or a very long line.

Suggest you trying connecting your ADSL directly to the BT master socket with no extensions fitted or phones or Filter. If it works ok then it indicates the problem is with your setup ie extensions filters and or wiring
