What am I getting!?

Hi, my local exchange (WNTW) is "comming soon" for fttc, all other cabinets on the exchange for "fttc planned" except for my cabinet (7) which is "fttp planned" we had engineers installing fiber cables along the poles a month or so ago but nothing has happened since and I cant find any info about a fttp/fttrn trial or roll out for my cabinet. Since this seems to be quite an unusual fiber deployment I am very curious to find out anything more about it. As you know contacting openreach is impossible now and talktalk dont want to be bothered with it, so if anyone can tell me anything more I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

That's the equipment used for WBC FTTP, which provides speed options of 40/10, 80/20, 200/20 and 330/30 (download/upload) with usually no install cost.

The black bottle looking thing on your second picture is a fibre manifold, here's a close up pic I have. https://www.flickr.com/photos/46141405@N07/15557030165,

The thin cable rolled up on the pole is usually the feed from exchange/Aggregation node, which will connect to a green fibre splitter box lower down the pole, which will then connect to the thicker BFT which goes to the manifold. The customer fibre will be run from the green box, through the BFT to the manifold, through a fibre drop wire into the customer's premises.

In my experience FTTP deployments often take a lot longer before they enter the "go live" phase where you can actually sign-up to the service. You don't say where you live, but your best bet for finding out the situation is often to contact the local Broadband Delivery UK based roll-out programme for your county and ask them about the cabinet progress.

UPDATE:

At I see from your pic that it's Shropshire.. in that case you want to ask this lot.

Thanks for the replys guys, I'll give them an email see what they say, we had a new aggregation node installed sometime earlier this year at the top of the road so thats something I guess. Ill keep my fingers crossed and wait I suppose.

Just dont go joining BT ISP, I see the small print on their Fibre ads has now (at least) upped the monthly limit to 40GB; but a fibre connection could chew through that in a couple of hours at full chat.

yeeeh I get through 200+ GB a month with 12meg atm, unlimited is a must, but isnt it only really BT and plusnet that do any FTTP? except for smaller isps that arent going to be out here.

I seem to remember other ISPs were offering FTTP services; but arent ALL FTTP orders "on hold" still??

We do FTTP on unlimited, when you are able to order give our sales a call.

No you're thinking of the Fibre-on-Demand service, which requires the end-user to help pay for the physical street works, while native FTTP has never stopped and only attracts a very small setup fee.

OK, my bad.

Emailed connencting shropshire they replied with this:

"Cabinet 7 in the Tenbury Wells exchange area is planned to be upgraded by Connecting Shropshire with Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), which gives access to download/upload speeds of up to 300/30mbps.

We’re expecting the build to be complete by this time next year. Thereafter, it takes around 8 weeks to commission, longer than for Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) as we’re taking fibre to many distribution points, not just to one place (the cabinet).

Realistically, it’s looking like the end of 2016 before fibre broadband will be available in the area. Please also be aware that, at this stage, we cannot be 100% certain that all the premises served by cabinet 7 will have access to fibre broadband."

I was just wondering the max length for a fttp install from pole to house, im about 140m from the nearest manifold, will this be too long for a fiber cable to the house?

Hmm good question, is there no other pole nearer to your home? The cable can be slung around a bit if needed and in other cases they might just build an extra pole, although you're so far away from the go-live phase that it may be too early to say.

yeh theres 2 poles between me and the node, so if its just a question of running cable then it should be no problem. Yeh not much point worrying about it atm as you say anything can happen in 15months. Thanks for the info.
