What happens to email when migrating to new provider?

Hi

Does anyone know what happens to email accounts when migrating to a new provider? (sorry if this has been asked before)

Currently with Firefly Internet and thinking about changing to a LLU provider to get faster speed.

I expect you lose email accounts but wonder if it is possible to downgrade from broadband to dialup to keep email accounts.

Has anyone migrated from Firefly that might know?

Will use non-ISP email in future so that I wont have this problem.

Your help and thoughts would be great!

Thanks
Mike

This varies from ISP to ISP.

By all rights when you switch ISP you change to a new email address as well. It is not possible to take your email address with you when you change ISPs, which is why it's sometimes good to buy dedicated email hosting if you want your own permanent address or setup an account with freemail providers like Google's GMail or Microsoft's Hotmail.

However some ISP's do often leave email accounts active and if your provider offers a free (local call rate) dialup connection then you may be able to specifically ask them about keeping your mail account alive. Many providers do leave email active for sometime after you've left, but not all.

Have you asked Firefly?? Some ISP's I have used in the past leave the email account active for varying lengths of time, (usually about 4 weeks), to allow you to make sure everyone has your "Change of address", others close and delete it the second you tell them you are leaving.
