What is the cheapest connection charge for a monthly service

I have an ADSL modem and splitter and would like some advice as to the ISP with the cheapest charge for setting up a 512 Broadband connection when our exchange gets to its RFS date on 26th May 2004. Can anyone with more experience than I help me?

Do not simply go for the cheapest - big mistake - anything under about £22 is unlikely to be the best around, simply because there isn't enough margin for profit (or system maintenance) after paying BT. There are certain ISp's which have attracted a lot of negative comments recently (tiscali springs to mind, as do V21). Problems have included low speeds, no connection, billing problems.....is it worth risking for the sake of a couple of £ a month?

From what I gather, Pipex is amongst the best for a balance of price and quality at the moment - it's £23.44/month with free activation (you pay a fee if you leave in the first 12 months).

The comments on this board have been generally good from Pipex users - I believe there have been periodic problems (but hey, no company is perfect), but they have been resolved pretty quickly. I am not with them.

By the way - I am assuming you want uncapped 512, as there are capped services that are obviously cheaper.

You can also get slower speeds (256, 150) for less money as well.

I am with Plus Net, and I can happily recommend them from a service point of view, but they charge the activation fee up front, and charge £22/month thereafter.

I hope this helps.

pipex i had 2 years good service left when i moved you can upgrade for free so start at say 512 cheapo and if you download lots of demos and such move up for free.

Thanks Akbray,

I have today signed up to PlusNet as well! I took their monthly package at £14.99 (incl VAT)which gives 512 speed. If I find that this is not fast enough, I can always upgrade and pay the price you mentioned.

PlusNet will host my existing domain name, domain name e-mails and my Website within the cost. I have to give 10 days notice if I want to leave. As I am not on BB at present, (our exchange RFS date is 26th May 2004), I had to pay a sign up fee of £70 (incl VAT).

How long have you been with NetPlus and what is your experience of them? So far, all the staff I spoke to (they offer service 24/7), have been very helpful.

I used plus net are great they relpy to you very fast if you have any problems or when you need to upgrade.

I wish I never left I always fall for the cheaper isp and pay the price for my mistake...

Stay with them............................ ;)

Have you had a look at NDO broadband? They have a selection of packages. If you don't want email, website etc., they do a bare bones for about £22 per month (first 5 months at £16 pm).

I've just started with them. And so far, so good.

Our activation charge is currently reduced to £29.99 until 31st July (http://www.icbroadband.com). The 512kbps uncapped unrestricted product with e-mail, spam filter, anti-virus is £22.99/month, and the minimum contract is 2 month (no penalties for cancelling in the first 12 months).

Good luck in your search for an ISP. Don't forget to check the ISP directory at www.net4nowt.com, and the listings at www.adslguide.org.uk
