What is this a sign of?

Hey scooby, how long was it between you seeing this stuff being installed and you being able order?
2/3 weeks I would say. My street had nothing except the old copper line. Now ...just this month we have the choice of 2 fibre lines (one in the ground and one from the pole) and also 5G wireless! Spoilt for choice!!

Nice m8! I'm excited now......

After 20 years of subpar internet it's going to be like Christmas!

Says "Zzoomm is planned", "Openreach FTTP is planned", "Full Fibre Ltd is Unknown".
Zzoomm is the most likely one of those results to mean something.

Openreach "planned" result is really not very good and the data comes from https://www.openreach.com/fibre-broadband/where-when-building-ultrafast-full-fibre-broadband, so the windows we're talking about are huge.

I'm super happy whenever anyone finds a new provider building for them via bidb :D

The "Unknown" result was just an error in the checker (which has since been fixed) and is totally meaningless.

This is very quick. I would say it's extremely unlikely it'll be so quick for you. For instance, I have had a CityFibre CBT outside for about a year now with no sign of being services any time soon.

You could ask Zzoomm if the equipment is theirs and maybe try to ask about timelines?

we had City Fibre in surrounding streets already, and a few had ports in the ground...they then connected up to a pole in our street and 2/3 weeks later, sign up became available. I think they move quicker when they know they will have a rival on the same road. We went with 3, 5G wireless and after an initial issue it's now working well...fingers crossed.

This will just be case by case (there's also competition on this street). 2-3 weeks is doable, but not common.

I emailed Zzoomm on Thursday asking them if they're building near me, asked if the equipment is theirs, gave them my postcode, house number and UPRN. Just awaiting a reply.

Thing is the workers had no identifying clothing....the vans were unmarked white vans. From past experience whenever there has been something being done with the telecoms there was always a clearly branded Openreach Van.

Edit: There appears to have been no further work in the street since earlier this week, but for a good few days they worked on the pole connected to my house.

There is no sign of poles further up the street having any preparation. Seems like they've done this pole and buggered off. Maybe they're working in the opposite direction though from the cabinet that is up that way. I'm about dead center of those two cabinets.

It’s a brave new world with AltNets. A lot of subcontracted work goes on.

Some of the ‘expected’ timescale in this thread are absurdly quick and not really commonplace. Three to six months is more usual and 12 to 18 months is not unheard of either.

These rollouts are neither straightforward nor are they continual or linear. They are typically completed in numerous phases often with large gaps of time between workers being visible on the street. That is normal - for Openreach or an Altnet builder.

I think it’s important to expectation set here. Folks will be disappointed if they think it’s not all done and dusted in the space of a month.

BTW checker is now saying the following but every ISP I check availability with is still only offering VDSL/SuperFast.

I got a response from Zzoomm saying they're awaiting response from the build team to see when the service will go live in my area. I asked them if the equipment on the pole is theirs but they didn't really answer and just gave some info on their build process so I don't know if they have just put in a query to the build team based on my email or if they checked if they are actively building and asked for a progress update. Still none the wiser.

Ok now the openreach checker has this.......

I click view products, check on the ISPs it shows and they are all still only listing superfast. I guess this needs time to update.

But does this mean the equipment on my pole was installed by openreach? Zzoomm? Do they work together and share the equipment or? I would rather not use the openreach network tbh

BTW checker and Openreach checkers only show what’s available from Openreach.

Zzoomm is a completely separate network. The arch competition!

Yeah I know. I was just thinking maybe they share the equipment on the pole as is Openreach sharing it's poles with altnets.

Hmmm,

I'm in a bit of a predicament now. I kind of wanted to avoid the Openreach network after instances of bad routing to the EU when gaming. I really want something that's going to give me the best gaming experience possible. I'ts all assumption but I had it in my head that Zzoomm is a smaller company and might have less chance of its network becoming saturated/oversold than the usual major ISPs.

It's become obvious now that the equipment on my pole is Openreachs and there is no sign of any other building in the area atm so I don't know how long I will have to wait to even get Zzoomm.

I was looking at Ghost gaming broadband but it's pricey compared to other ISPs. Thye say they have direct connection to the gaming servers such as steam, xbox etc. Would this even make any difference?

On top of that I'm still in contract with TalkTalk for almost another year so if I do switch I'm going to have to fork out at least a good £120 quid to get out early. Either that or upgrade to TalkTalk FTTP........which doesn't show as available yet for me, still just superfast. Many other ISPs show FTTP as available to me now but the LLU ISPs (Sky, TalkTalk) dont. Do sky and TalkTalk serve their FTTP through Openreach or is it just their xDSL?

Also, I was looking at Leetline. They do 1gb/115mb through Openreach for £53-56 a month while they do 1gb Symmetrical through CityFibre for £37-38 a month. That's disgusting!

They only share poles, no equipment is shared.

As for the best gaming ISP you best bet is posting on the gaming forums and take suggestions from gamers local to you. Then you can be more positive of a good result, routings can vary from connection exchange to exchange. Zen seem problematical currently are they route some people to Manchester and then to London. Direct connections as per Ghost have the best results but they may not have enough customers at your exchange to offer a direct connection or a server that covers your games so local gamers will give best advice.

Makes no sense. Openreach dont “do” routing. They simply provide a flat layer 2 Ethernet network to the GEA handover exchange.

From there you’re in the hands of your ISP and their particular backhaul.

There are plenty of very decent ISPs that use the OR network. Do your homework as noted above.
