What sauce does ISP's do over the Openreach network?

Hi,

I was just wondering about Openreach vs ISPs. So... in my area, the network is owned by Openreach. So when a connection need to be made or moved, the ISP will call Openreach to fix that.

So what is it that the ISP does? For instance, we are with Merula.co.uk and planning to move on to others like Zen Internet. What is the technical difference, or what is it that the ISP does and where Openreach stops?

The ISP, assuming it's a proper provider, has to build its own network, manage the connection to the internet and supply capacity to fuel that connectivity.

OK,

ISP
- has servers/gateways to connect customers to the internet

So you have ISPs than under/over sell. So some ISP do not have enough overcapacity to deal with high loads and some do. So I wondered, how can we choose/check which ISP is ‘promising’ the speeds they offer? Is there a site with all ‘real-life’ speeds?

Openreach
- they basically maintain the networks that physicially connect to the houses/homes of people.

So they provide a connection between a home and a ISP (assuming they both have access to the Openreach network). So... are there differences? Is one ISP ‘better’ connected to Openreach than someone else?

That is a question I had how Openreach vs ISP work together, and what is ‘better’ connected. The question arises because some provide for instance ‘very’ low broadband pricing, but is that at the cost of ‘real-life’ capacity/bandwidth?
