Whats best 56k gaming ISP

I was with Tiscali until recently, can anyone let me know what they thing is the best 56k isp for gaming.

thanks in advance

ntl if you live in a cabled area, if not you get a 160 - 220 ping with most surfport24 packages.

no gamers should still be using a modem.

Here it is again ... that classic question :D

Fast24 have a 143 prefixed 0845 number that is supposed to be very good.

Plur... what you on about. I do fine with my modem. I’ll take anyone on with my 56k connection. If you beat me it’s because you’re better than me and nothing to do with your connection :p

Plur well over 60% of the country has no alternatives. Even if reasonable amounts of cash is no problem. Satelite u still use modem for up channel. Cable takes months to install if available in your area i.e. inner cities and not all cities or streets. Scotland you are screwed etc. So how can everyone not choose to use modems. It will be about 2006-10 before everyone ie 75% of people have the alternatives.

Er - not everyone can afford cable mate. Me for one. Anyway my supra express 56e does me just fine on NTL with pings of around 130-140 if the server side is stable.

It's not a panacea, but analog line bonding is worth considering... (especially when combined with V.92/V.44)

Show me a way to get multiple channel bonding + an ISP that supports it + everything else that goes with to do this for under £30 a month and I'll do it.

Christopher.

Crap, you only need the bandwidth for gettting patches for games, which are on most magazine cover CD's anyway. Meh supra express 56k does meh fine! Besides ISDN is the best for gaming! ADSL is best for downloading.

And cable owns all (If ya can get it
;) )

Anyway my point is, you can play games perfectly fine on a modem, especially ISDN :D

I found AOL was a really good gaming isp (i play counter strike). The pings were around 160ms. The only problem is that youll have to spend a couple of hours testing which number (they have about 10 numbers) gives you the best stability AND the best ping. Some numbers give you very good ping but the connection keeps on failing, other numbers give you average pings with good connections. Dont know why this was, but there were 2 numbers which gave me good ping and good connection stability. Another problem with AOL is the stupid browser. You have to use it to dial up, which means you get a stupid program wasting valuable memory and probably wating cpu usage.

I have left them though, and tried Free24-7, basically an awful ISP with pings averaging 300ms on a really good day, to about 500ms average with constant connection failures, and am now on the Fast24 Anytime package, which is NOT good for gaming. I get 240ms -320ms average, but every 2 minutes or so the ping shoots up into the 600s, and then comes back down. Thats really annoying when your gaming, and you find yourself getting killed by someone as soon as you see them (hpb servers btw). Fast24 has excellent download speeds but is avreage-bad for gaming.

Jolt was a good gaming isp, in fact Jolt's isp IS for games, but something seems to have gone wrong lately, although I was playing on a Jolt server and someone had their anytime package getting 160ms. I havent used Jolt yet, and was about to sign up, but their site says theyre awaiting new login numbers or something like that, so went for Fast24.

I do agree with whoever said that gamers shouldnt be on 56k. Although you CAN play games on 56k, and there are a few 56k only servers to play on, it really limits you in what you can do in a game. The majority of gamers are on broadband, just connect to any server in the uk and youll find most people have a ping of around 40ms, and a few hpbs. Also, being a hpb means decent clans wont take you, since good players on good connections will OWN you if your on 56k. Youll have to be really good with 56k to be able to get into a good clan AND play well in clan matches. Considering there are loads of good players on broadband, thats a very hard feat to accomplish.

Yea, dont know about clans! however I have no problems! ping nicely at 95 - 105 ms! This could be down to location, as I 'think' 56k performance varies like beatch across the country!

I was on Jolt anytime, and its rubbish! check out the forums on Jolt. Get an ISP with software compression, as it helps gaming no end. EG. Clara net, and Jolts local dial (Which IS good)

also check out this site! should help get those pings down :p

Surely telewest blueyonder isp dial up is the best for gaming, or so i was told neways as my friend who has it was pinging in at about 120ms on a 56k modem!!

Peter

Telewest BlueYonder ISP is for Telewest customers only. I ain't in a Telewest area :(

Could it have something to do with telewest coverage is only a small area so the average distance from modem to ISP server is small compared to the same for a national ISP. ? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
