What's happening to Entanet?

Not very often you'll hear me moaning, in fact it's around 2 years since i last posted on here...

I'm with UKFSN and have been on there upto 8meg package for several years. My connection has always been solid and reliable and very rarely did speeds drop below 5500Kbps. My router has always sync'd at >8000Kbps and very rarely disconnected.

For at least a week now, my download speeds have been consistently <300Kbps and are not varying in relation to peak/off peak times. This is only JUST beating the 256K package i had about 6 or 7 years ago! Have now contacted UKFSN but i'm not expecting much joy as i believe the Entanet server nodes may be totally over loaded at present. I'm on the Birmingham node - can anyone remind me of the url where i can check its ACTUAL load status?

So is it just just ME having trouble or is this affecting a lot of Entanet customers?

It might be worth running a BT speedtest and posting the results of what your IP profile etc is

Download speed achieved during the test was - 296 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8064 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 6000 Kbps

That is quite poor and was that done this morning? if you can follow the instrustions to do the tap 2 and 3 it will give you more info on where the bottle neck is, if the speeds are below 600kbps on the tap 3 test then you do have grounds to raise a fault to BT.

There has been a lot of Microsoft updates last couple of days.

My O.S. is Ubuntu Linux, so you can't blame Microsoft! :)
Test was done just before i posted. Have run it a number of times over the last few days and getting the same result, regardless of the time of day. Can't get the other test to run - it keeps timing out. I can connect ok using the "speedtest@speedtest_domain" login name but when i click "go" the popup window just stays blank. It may be a firefox/linux issue, although i also tried using Windows XP in a VM and that also timed out.

There is a test speedtest server but I cant remember the details for it which would take you straight to tap 3, it will be others downloading the updates which is making the back haul more congested than normal.

Have just gone through the test procedure again:

Download speed achieved during the test was - 240 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8064 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 6000 Kbps

Still unable to run the tap 3 test, the url for which is:
Code:
http://test3.speedtester.bt.com/indexTap3Frames.asp?BBIP=xxxxxxxxxxx&TAP=3&BBD=yes
where xxxxxxxxxxx is the telephone number of the line. I assume that is correct because i dug it out of the HTML source code...

Very annoyed to be honest, but at least i have A connection!

That is into fault territory and I've seen similar complaints about poor speeds from Entanet related ISPs over the past month. Let us know what the ISP tells you because I'm seeing this same drop on connections belonging to friends who are also on Entanet based providers and they're not in your area.

Sure will. Am still waiting for UKFSN to respond. When i have contacted them in the past, i have always had hand written replies with about 20 mins. Have been waiting since yesterday and all i have is an automated response asking me to do the BT speed test...which i sent yesterday.

It feels like i have been heavily throttled, however i am not a heavy user and very rarely use more than 20Gb a month of my 300/30 allowance. Just dug out an email i received on the 10th October which i hadn't read until now:

I have received a number of customer reports of low speed issues on ADSL
broadband connections supplied through our partner Entanet.

These reports are generally based upon an expectation of higher than
experienced speeds due to the fact that Enta's NOC status is not
reporting the ALT as in operation.

I believe that this is an error on the NOC status site.

Customer usage patterns, as seen over the past several years, show that
weekend usage, at a time when customers are not charged for bandwidth
usage, generates a peak in demand for bandwidth capacity and so I expect
the ALT to be in operation for most of the time at the weekend as it has
been for several years, since it's introduction.

I will be discussing the reporting on the NOC site with Enta tomorrow.

I do not expect the ALT to be similarly reducing customer download
speeds during weekday daytime periods. If you are experiencing such a
reduction in speeds please do let me know and provide the text result
from the BT speed tester (http://speedtester.bt.com/) including details
of the data and time the test was taken. This will provide me with the
details I need to have a useful discussion with Enta about the matter.

Note that only customer ADSL connections provided through Entanet are
affected by this. Our customers who have ADSL connections provided via
our LLU partnership are not affected.

That's definitely too much load, ideally even when busy you want some more overhead in capacity to manage unusual peaks. I expect the situation will improve with BT's WBC price drop but Entanet could do with at least acknowledging that there is a problem in some areas.

Yes, Entanet obviously have a major problem and are doing nothing to address it. UKFSN have still not replied, so i have decided to find an alternative ISP. As always, i will be looking for month-to-month contracts and that seems to give me a choice of:

ICUK
VISPA
XILO

Of these 3, XILO looks the most appealing although i am slightly suspicious at £14.99 for a 16Mb "unmetered" service. Even so, if it turns out to be another case of slamming, then i can simply move on after a month...

A good choice, or no?

We certainly won't slam your line... it's a shared LLU product - so you retain your line with your current voice provider.

You'll need a MAC to migrate but it's a one month contract with one months notice to cancel/migrate :)

Update...
Still no reply from UKFSN "support", i even checked my Google spam box just in case, but nothing. This morning (saturday), my internet was noticably faster. Did a speed test and am now back up around the 7Mb mark i was previously getting. Checked Entanet's status page and the Birmingham node is still showing red, so not sure what has changed. The fact still remains that my service has been crap for several weeks and support has failed miserably...

Maybe the reason they always end up upsetting you is because you want cheap packages with all the bells and whistles lol

Ermmm...no...all i want is a reliable service with decent customer support - something that ALL customers are entitled to but rarely get. UKFSN/Entanet delivered the goods, so i stayed with them for several years. XILO are currently delivering the goods, so i intend to stay with them until such time that the service is unsatisfactory. Is that so difficult to understand? Or perhaps you are just another begrudged salesman...

Actually who ARE vtlinternet? They are not listed in the top 50 ISP's...??

EDIT:
A quick search reveals the site is registered to a one-man band named Clive Smith (A.K.A. richboy2k, perhaps...) and uses a U.S. registered backbone.
