Whats the best graphics card for around £80

rruwalton

ISP Rep
A young chap at where I work wants to buy a g/card so he can play the latest games. He has seen several on www.lightcomputers.com for around £80.

I would be much obliged if members could help advise what g/card would be worth buying for around £80 and feedback any other information that would help.

Thank you

Richard

DONT touch mentor products with a 10' Barge pole, I cant stress this HIGHLY enough  I bought 2 graphics cards (2 GeForce 64MB MX400's) 1 was Jetway other 1 was Mentor and the Mentor ran HALF the speed :crap: but thinking that this was a one off I bought another mentor product (Hub) and it was Awful (kept shorting out), my mate also bought a Mentor Router and he has nothing but problems with it since day 1 so my advice, stay well clear of them :(

I've just bought a GeForce FX 128Mb for £55. Hoping to fit it tonight.
Bought specifically to d/l the wife's camcorder to DVD. I will report back when we have tried it. The 32Mb I have at the moment is totally inadequate. It keeps losing the colour.

I have 2 FX5600's and find that they are very underpowered in comparison to a Radeon 9600 (standard) and what I posted earlier is the Pro version of the 9600 which would blow the socks off it ;)

If the MoBo your installing it into has a 4x AGP and the graphics corrupt on booting windows (Assuming your using Windows), go into the BIOS and set 4x support to disabled and that should fix it, HOWEVER if the MoBo has a Sis Chipset make sure you set the AGP to 1x using the Software patch BEFORE you install the card, it will solve a lot of grief later :)

good luck :)

I'd go for the 256MB Radeon 9600 pro for £82.91 at OverClock.co.uk :) hope that helps..

Id agree, the 9600 is a very good card. I for one would go with a 128mb version, not much need for 256mb at the mo, and it may save a bit of cash.

Also, try and go for a tyan one, they are very good make and have temperature sensors and overclocking software. Even if your freind isnt interested in o/c, its a good make and should last forever and a day. :)

When we opened the box we found there was no software or leaflet packed with it, and a sticker on the motherboard warning us not to fit a 3.3volt adapter. I had to go back for the missing items so there is a delay before we start using it. It is not 3.3v fortunately.

The chap at work may have £100 to spend - Has anyone any recommendations before he buys on a whim please?

Thanks
Richard

Try this: here

Or he could go for a 9800SE, which is about the same price.

Either way, the 9600XT should definatly be capable of playing the newest games (doom3, halflife 2 etc).

I Agree, my 5600 FX plays Doom 3 with MAXED out settings @ 1280x1024 so a 9600XT could do it hands down, and, it looks blimmin great too :D mind you, you do need to turn up the gamma slightly, lol

If I had £100 to spend on a Graphics Card, I'd add another £40ish and go for the 9800 Pro :D which have fell in price big time, but thats just me :)

Thats exactly what I would do, as the 9800pro is the best value card out at the moment, by a long way. The gap between the next card, X800, is huge. Its simply not worth getting a X800 yet.

However, he did say £100, so I resisted and gave the 9600XT and 9800SE.
