Just left tiscali got to say it was the worst 5 months I have ever had ,could not play online games on the ps3 or computer after 4pm till about 11pm ,don’t want to go through that again.
So can any one advice on which is the best isp for my needs
I will use it mainly for on line games ,downloading the odd film and music, don’t really mind paying that bit extra if it’s a good service did think of cable /virgin ?

I am on cable at present it would depend on where you lived as to what your pings are like. I live in Manchester if you post an ip for a server I can doa ping test for you plus a few others could say area and post ping test.

Aquiss seem to have a special package aimed at gamers, Then the normal good ones like Zen, Fast.co.uk never seem to have any complaints on the speed side.

Leaving Tiscali at the end of May, costs me more ringing their complaints department to cancel contract then it would to stick it out:mad:I have a ps3 and cod 4 was my main game until they stopped me playing it between 4-11pm, so i couldnt play any clan matches
Im liking the look of aquiss gonna ring them up tomorrow to see if they dont block ports or have no dreaded p2p gaming disease:)
These and fast.co.uk are the top two on my wishlist.
Looked at plus.net they prioritise gaming but their packages dont appeal to me

Tell me about it Tiscali must be the worst isp for literally everything .I was in the same boat as u I was with them from September last year could not play cod4 on the ps3 from about 4pm till 11pm nor anything else on the pc ,I think they got sick of me ringing in the end so give me mac code and did not bill me for the rest of contract .I joined Aquiss last night it sounds good if it isn’t its just a mounths contract

ADSL24 have a control panel where you can turn interleaving on and off without picking up the phone (turning interleaving off will lower pings, but can make your connection unstable if you live far from the telephone exchange).

And the pings aren't bad either. :)

We would like it sponsored too at just over 1k per month! Having said that, that is 20meg on a 100meg bearer which isn't too shady as the national price for a BT 10meg leased line is 19k pa..

So if you ever feel the need for a leased line.....

I did this at 10.20pm which, as any Enta customer will know, is around the time when everyone on Enta goes download crazy after the 10pm - 8am off-peak period starts.

Even when the centrals are loaded I seem to get good pings, even though my speed is only about half of what I get during peak times.

Thanks Agrajag it is best to do them when they will be at the worst :)

sky

hey all have been a crazy uk gamer since the days of dialup thats how hardcore i am ;) lol fps at 300 ms and we still played em!

Anyway i was with bt for a couple of years on lately, living very close to my local exchange, pings weren't great, they never are when you live in N.Ireland ;) we just gotta be better gamers ;) but i found the Bt isp to be rock solid and most importantly stable, i was pinginging in the mid 40's on jolt servers, but my ping didn't dance a round a lot, which is hugely important;

Unlike my current isp; SKY!!!!!!!!!!! what a heap of crap, bought a new house, granted further from the exchange, and got sky tv in so thought i'd give their 8mb broadband a whirl don't do 16mb here yet---- d/l speeds have halved and whats worse the pings jump up and down like a hooker on speed, avoid sky like the plague if you are a gamer, sily experiment by me, nevermind the fact you HAVE to use their supplied router, lmao, and their tech support is terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I'm on Sky, pings tend to be around 44ms so are not fantastic, but that's because interleaving depth on my connection is set to 64 which I think is the maximum and I haven't asked Sky's support to have it reduced.

gaming isp

Well I've been with Freedom2Surf for 5 years and until now I've had little problems. Mostly as I was on a fixed 2mb line and could always game and browse without issue. Now I have been given a 'free upgrade' to (All you can eat) LLU that I didn't ask for. Thanks Tiscali!

Having massive download speeds and limits isn't what I want, a stable connection without lagspikes it all I ask.

So I'm on the hunt for a new ISP, I've scouting around for a few days and have built up some options that I hoped people could have a glance at.

Option 1
Zen 8000 Active / Pro
I've read alot of good things about Zen and not many bad ones. I'm concerned about how they manage the evening user load, after a nice chat with a sales person Zen told me there is no data-shaping perfomed and thus I should get the best out of my connection.

Option 2
Vivaciti After a email query I found they can do a fixed 2mb line if needed or a 8mb one on the entranet network.

I'd rather a static 2mb line if anyone can point me to compnaies that still offer such services as I feel my connection will be slightly more stable than on a up to 8mb line.

We can too, BUT don't be fooled. Fixed speed lines are due to cease as a provision later this year, and the replacement is a capped speed max circuit. We already have some on trial exchanges that are long line bonds where we suddenly found what was a fixed 512k line is suddenly synced at 1.3 meg and flaky as chuff. But they had a fixed BRAS profile of 512k still. Eventually after some arguing with BT they returned them to fixed speed but pointed out there is a review of process as part of the 21CN upgrades where that is what will happen to fixed speed lines. After raising it with the acc mgr, it turns out it is to be brought up at the next 21CN meeting to see if they can provide both a capped speed and profile so it is a virtual fixed speed line but delivered on the Max platform, but hard capped. This will be good news...
