whats the service / speed like?

just been looking at the £5.99 package for my neighbour as she is new to computers and wants to get on to the net now. ive been looking around and it looks like this is the cheapest broadband she can get.
i have read some negative points in here but then those were ages ago is the service good now?

if anyone from plusnet is reading, the wireless router you offer, does this also have an ethernet port on it?

I've never seen a wireless router without a Ethernet port (you couldn't actually call it a 'router' without one) so you're probably safe to assume it has one :) . Quite a lot of opinions on the ISP can be found here, albeit a bit mixed:

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/review/products/244.html

Typically ISP performance can vary a lot depending on where you live, the quality of your phone line and the ISP itself. For £5.99 you shouldn't expect wonders, but remember that price is only applicable to certain areas of the country and if you're not in that location then it will cost £11.99.

There's also the long 18 month contract to consider, so if the service ends up being crap then your options become somewhat limited. The £5.99 service is definitely for basic and lite Internet usage, but it sounds like this would suit your neighbour.

The last thing to be mindful of is PlusNet's not so clearly communicated line rental aspect, which even we can't quite be sure about after having just checked the page again ourselves:

Phone line rental - all of our broadband products require phone line rental at £10.95 a month. Minimum contract length of one month applies to Plusnet Home Phone.
We find this quite confusing because the 'Value' package details clearly state "A BT landline is required for Plusnet Value". But then there are plenty of places where the same page states "Packages from only £5.99 * requires line rental at £10.95 a month".

If in doubt, begin the signup routine, see what the prices are and then don't complete it if you feel uncomfortable with the offer.

Hi Nick,

The router has four ethernet ports. It's a Thomson 585v7 (without the wireless USB adapter).

Hi Mark,

You *don't* need to subscribe to one of our landline packages to take advantage of the £5.99 Value package.

Kind Rgds,

Hello nick123, I'm with Plusnet into 7 months. I would say I am very happy with the service so far.
In fact out of 3 ISP's these past 5 years Plusnet is the best. Go for it. :)

Thanks Bob, it might be a good idea to clear up the contradictive language on the residential page though as the phone and broadband deal text overlaps, without clear description, with the standalone ones.

Is it this bit you mean Mark?

The bit in brackets is there to cover the 'Unlimited Evening and Weekend calls' bit. Perhaps we could move the bit in brackets to the footer information for the superscript '2'. Alternatively I suppose we could move the bracketed information underneath the 'Unlimited Evening and Weekend calls' bit instead of positioning it below the broadband headline price?

There's also the small print quotes, as per the one in my original post, where it says:

"Phone line rental - all of our broadband products require phone line rental at £10.95 a month."

That is somewhat confusing as it lacks any initial identification of being associated with phone only packages.

I see your point Mark. I've raised an internal problem (ref: 57704) and will have one of our content guys review the information on the sales pages.

Thanks for pointing it out! :)

Hi thank you for your replies. i have recommended this to my neighbour.

i did go though part of the sign up page using my phone number etc and i am in the £5.99 area so should be the same for my neighbour.

the router is the same as mine so thats fine the only reason i asked about the router is im sure i read something like "wireless network adaptor required in each computer" which i know is obvious if you are going to run totally wireless but my idea is to have the computer wired and if her mobile phone has wireless or if anyone comes around with a laptop they can use the wireless. personally i dont really rate wireless at all but its a nice thing to have.

That bit has been updated now.

I've struggled so far to get any of the other content updated I'm afraid as not everybody within the business has the same opinions about whether or not the text is concise ;)
