When i say Interleaving is On Its On , Dont argue with me

Hi all ,

Had a frustrating phone call this morning , basically ive been having minor issues with latency over the last week nothing major but considering i pay a bomb for my Internet i expect nothing but the best on ZENS part , i still consider zen to be professional but in this case i'd consider it to be extremely unprofessional. When the fault originally started small fluxuations in my ping i decided to suggest to the tech support to switch interleaving back on to see if it may fix anything on my line , it was a pure shot in the dark on my part to see whether or not the line will improve and it didnt.

So i gave it a day for the fault order to get closed and phoned back in yesterday to get interleaving switched back off , the person on the phone said the fault order is still open and hes waiting for it to be closed before he can do anything i said thats fair enough i will call back in tomorrow morning and get the new fault order opened.

The phone call was as followed :

I phoned into a employee named chris , i started to explain to him what happened exactly as above that my intereaving was On and i wanted it off , i got into detail and explained why it was originally turned back on in the first place. He stated that the interleaving was already off :S

I said its not off , i said i can see its not off by the way my latency is moving , i can physically see my latency with my eyes i explained , and i can also see the default ping with interleaving on which is around 30 to 33ms , i said i wasn't happy with the way the line was performing with it on and i'd like it switched off and he was still claiming it was off , he was arguing with me non stop about this! He then went into meltdown and said something complete idiotic and i quote

*I play call of duty at home and i get 140 ping , theres really no difference between 30 and 140*

I was gobsmacked lol , I couldn't believe what was said just then by then i new what i was dealing with over the phone so i began to give him hints i wanted the call to end and he kept stating he can see on this screen its off and he can send me a email showing the statistics.

Look im not being funny or anything, ive played this game for nearly 4 years if i see a change in it no matter how small or big i know about it , i attend lans and im almost at the top tier of professional gaming i know when i see difference's in my game and i certainly know when interleaving is on or off just by the feel of gameplay and the facts on my screen!

I just thought it was rude he didn't investigate the matter further and never even bothered to take into consideration the customer might be right , there was no ifs or buts in his eyes i was just wrong and i can tell he was getting frustrated over the call as well.

Now im ticked off.

Heres the proof , you may not understand it but you can see the diffrences.

As you can see above both clearly labeled , the diffrence in latency is massive , the thin bumpy is how interleaving has looked off to all 3 isps ive been with in the last 5 years , talktalk , virgin , zen.

Im not ranting or moaning , i really do feel like ive been hard done by here.

Hmm COD at 140ms+ would not be a fun experience as a lot of your shots are going to miss when they should hit and the warping effect would become noticable. Mind you, for me anything around 30-60ms is fine but that's just IMO, I don't expect much more from ADSL lines :) .

At this point I'm not sure how much practical visibility an ISP has over the interleaving feature itself, sure they can set it on or off but that must then go through BT. Your best bet might be to email over the evidence and ask for their thoughts that way as its hard to visualise this stuff via the phone.

I suspect that if the support staffer sees the setting has been set to "off" then there's no a lot they can do. One problem is that BT has trouble recognising latency and packet loss as a fault, which makes it hard for ISPs to tackle unless it becomes so serious as to cause real connectivity problems.

Assuming a BT Wholesale provisioned line, it's pretty straight forward. You can either check BT Wholesale's reporting systems (WCR/BBCR), or alternatively run a DSL status check on the line. There's probably other ways to find out but it's typically one of those two methods that I'd use.

Most routers will tell you somewhere within the GUI whether or not the line is interleaved or fast-path as well.

Rgds,

Well ive come back to tell you , i was correct in what i was saying.

I new threw previous expriences exactly how a line performs without interlaving on and my expriences had paid off. I phoned into zen today to get a update on the complaint i had made , after explaining to the team leader exactly what happened he then went onto explain to me the courses of actions that may or may not be taken , after that i went into a bit of detail about the interleaving issue when i said it was off and he was demanding to me it was on , well it turns out i was correct.

My line has been interleaved since the phone call , i know this because he told me interleaving had been set to 1 which is on and my request to see if it had been set to auto hadnt even gone threw. So the systems had been updated rather slowly i might add.
