When IPv4 and IPv6 News Coverage Reaches Epic Fail

An award for the worst pieces of technology journalism should definitely be split between these two:

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/01/26/internet-run-ip-addresses-happens-anyones-guess/

http://www.news.com.au/technology/t...is-anyones-guess/story-e6frfro0-1225995086627

I can't even bring myself to quote much from these articles without turning red; most of it is incredibly inaccurate. It's almost as bad as the newspapers that cover climate change reports and invariable show headlines that reach completely opposite conclusions and ignore context.

Still, the best quote has to be..

" Web developers have tried to compensate for this problem by creating IPv6 -- a system that recognizes six-digit IP addresses rather than four-digit ones."

Website developers huh? Six digit IP's?

Now in fairness I can see where all the mistakes come from in the articles and if anything it's a good example of just how little some people understand about internet infrastructure. This perhaps reflects the problems with government policy right now, which often fails to understand the technology underneath.

That was fun to read! Nice one Mark

Regards

Matt

They have changed it now

Editors' Note: An earlier version of this story erroneously described an IP address as consisting of four digits, rather than four sets of digits, and inaccurately described the IP address. This story has been updated to reflect the correction.

How dare you cast a slur on Fox News!! Don't you realise they are the only reliable source of news for right-wing, bible thumping, gun lovers across the US? You'll make Sarah Palin very angry ...

You have to recognise that there's a distinct difference between allocating the last available IPv4 blocks and actually distributing those to the ISPs as and when requested. The blocks will probably go on Monday, if our sources are to be believed, but it will then take a couple of years before they're all used up. So the political exhaustion of addresses starts next week but the official exhaustion will take awhile longer.
