Which FTTP provider - community fibre, Openreach or Hyperoptic?

I’ve decided to move out of my place and the new place has 3 fttp providers available. It’s in central London location.

Community fibre is the cheapest, then Hyperoptic/Openreach.

Community fibre doesn’t offer static IP address for home packages. Hyperoptic does for £5 a month. Openreach does it for free if I pick the correct company (maybe Aquiss).

My usage is latency sensitive, I’ll be mostly on video calls and play multiplayer games.

So which of the 3 providers are likely to provide better routing and lowest latency? I’ll be using my own router, likely to be one of these unifi range equipment.

Which provider should I go for?

Community fibre is a hit and miss as i have friends on it but i get lower ping then them on games like valorant, cod, league.. so on.
 
In London you should have a pretty low latency experience no matter who you go with for the most part.

Hyperoptic tends to be especially good when it comes to the quality of the connection though. And their customer support is good too. They tend to know what they are talking about even when it comes to technical discussion rather than reading from a script. Pricing is generally decent too. My partner has been with them for years now and we have nothing bad to really say about them (Other than the engineering team who were cabling the street before the service went life anyway - That's another story!)

Is your install a FTTB? As in a fibre to your building communications room then Ethernet to your flat or its fibre all the way? I’m conscious that XGSPON may affect latency.

It seems to me that there are two relevant factors for Community Fibre:

1) All the packages under 3Gb/s use CGNAT so a service with a public IP4 address will cost £49/month (list price)

2) From my experience it is a bit unreliable with what look like network configuration issues every few months (typically a few hours to clear). Any physical issues seem to be slower than the Openreach copper fixes I've known in the past.

On the positive side, I've never observed any "network loading" effects which suggests that all common systems are suitably sized for all current users. Their provided router is fairly decent and there are no barriers to using your own instead.

As an indication, if your video calling would work ove a mobile network (which are generally CGNAT) then it will work on Community Fibre.

The advantage Community Fibre has over Openreach provided connections is the symmetrical up and down speeds.

I've not used Hyperoptic but my understanding is that they use Openreach business grade (symmetrical) circuits to a building and share that capacity around the building.

If there is a service already provisioned to the address I would try that first.

Community Fibre have 60 days to cancel.

If you sign up via a price comparison site you generally get some "incentive".

My community fibre ping to 8.8.8.8 is 4ms on their 150Mb/s service with CGNAT..

1.6ms to 2.4ms on a non-CGNAT 3Gb. London/UK COD servers are 3ms easy (in-game info, PC over Eth!).

It's bad enough for me to actively avoid having a connection that uses it at home wherever possible. But it's entirely usable, hence you see plenty of people who have it and are either happy enough with the setup or simply don't know enough about it to know how it would affect them.

The fact that you don't host anything means that you should be able to use it without any significant disruption. But with your online gaming you may encounter occasional issues - Whether that is certain games not liking CGNAT and preventing you from joining certain servers, or somewhat decreased performance (extra latency) from the extra processing that goes on behind the scenes to route your data traffic correctly as a result of this configuration.

Put simply. If you don't specifically already know about certain use cases of yours that would be prevented by CGNAT the chances are that it's not likely to make any of your online tasks impossible and that your connection should be perfectly usable. However if you have a choice, it's probably best to avoid it if possible to get the best performing connection you can get.

I’m leaning towards Hyperoptic. I’m wondering if I see a fibre in the new place (I haven’t fully moved in yet), is it likely to be point to point fibre or is it XGSPON like Openreach and Community Fibre?
 
I had a Hyperoptic FTTB connection years ago and the service was excellent.

With that said, downtime on my current Community Fibre connection has been minimal. The occasional once-a-month blip in the small hours of the morning (seconds), a few days of increased latency this year (I was away, and didn't push for a faster resolution), and an early splice failure somewhere in the PON two years ago (a few days to resolve - service was intermittent as the splice hadn't completely failed).

Being as critical as possible, that would amount to 2.5 days of downtime in year 1 (hours when no connection) and 0.5 day in year 3 (peak hours over 3-4 days when speed low).

That puts CF at 99.3% in year 1, 99.9%+ in year 2 and 99.8% in year 3.

Yes, the Openreach FTTP is 99.9%+, but the upload is useless.

Hyperoptic FTTB did have an outage at one point due to a fibre strike, but I'd say they average a little more reliable than CF.

I have no experience of Hyperoptic PON products.
 
I’m on the non-CGNAT CF 1Gbps service and pings are low. The CGNAT users however are impacted occasionally by peak hours, higher latency and reliability issues.

From photos online, in some buildings Hyperoptic present their service as a CAT5 socket so you might see a labelled socket somewhere.

Alternatively you might see an optical fibre and (possibly) adapter from fibre to CAT5 (ONT).

It’s a matter of having a look in likely places.

I’ll give the existing provider a try first once I find out which one is that and report back :)

The Hyperoptic connection is CGNAT.

I haven't had an opportunity to do rigorous testing but from what I can remember yesterday of brief testing (via WiFi) and only with CF/HO as BT wasn't installed yesterday yet:

1. Hyperoptic returns lower latency on average compared to CF despite behind CGNAT (additional hops from going through the CGNAT server). I noticed that latency difference increases when going further afield e.g. the US and Japan/Korea. For UK regions, the difference is like 2-3ms. For th
2. Hyperoptic router (Nokia) sucks, I can't really say much other than that it's not good. CF router (Linksys) is impressive, far better than I thought it'd be for a typical ISP router.
3. I live in a building with a lot of flats, so I get a lot of SSIDs on my phone when I go around walking. Surprisingly enough, there are little to no Hyperoptic SSIDs. I believe the high cost of Hyperoptic compared to Community Fibre makes it a non-starter for many of us. This has had a predictable effect on my speed, during peak times, my speed go down to 100mbps-200mbps. It appears there is little congestion with Hyperoptic - probably because not many are using it at the moment.

I will do more thorough testing over this weekend using wired ethernet and posting my results here. Any special requests, please feel free to mention it, I may be able to do it.

hyperoptic should be the lowest latency out of all three, can you do some traceroutes/ ping test, to 8.8.8.8, 1.1.1.1 fastly.com + so on
 
I have said this several times, but just one more time for good measure. Doing pings and traceroutes to the public DNS services like 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 is relatively pointless if you're seeking a repeatable network test. These endpoints are anycast and served by multiple endpoints and the networks will load balance requests across the various endpoints. You would be much better off doing a traceroute to somewhere that you typically connect to and care about, and choosing a network interface along that journey, and ping/traceroute that.
