Which isp are you with please?

rruwalton

ISP Rep
I am moving away from AOL. I have my mac code and need a new isp.

I have a lot of respect for ispreview members and would be much obliged for any tips on which isp to go for.

My criteria is:

Price of around £20
Min of 512kbs connection
No low download limits i.e. 3gig or less per month
Good tech support with no premium rate telephone call charges
Email support
Professional service

A monthly contract looks like a good idea.

I have looked at Plusnet and they offer 2 packages at £14.99 & £21.99 - No idea on limits at present.

All comments are very much appreciated

Thanks

Richard

Good luckl with your hunt for the perfect ISP, if you find it, let us know.

Pipex meets most of your requirements except tech support; thats pants; they seem to think that responding withing 24 hours = responding on the following friday, but then if you have a problem most people post it on here and get it sorted.

Anyway, brace yourself, you're going to be outside the kindergarten walls now, a lot of places that AOL wouldnt let you see are now available and some of them are VERY dodgy, check your firewall, update the AV and Spybot S&D.(and switch to Firefox if you havent already).

I don't envy you in your search. There aren't many isp's that offer truely unlimited downloads any more, than those that do are starting to introduce fair useage policies / traffic shaping.

Just looking at your list, my current isp ticks most of those boxes. :D

 The mind boggles as to what places you visit Captain ;)

I hope NOD32 AV/ Agnitum Outpost F/W / Firefox meet your approval

Thank you for your comments

Im currently with Plusnet who have been reasonable for the moment, although whoever runs their customer relations dept. needs a good kick up the jacksy or fired or both.
Apart from that they have very good tech. support.

They have just introduced traffic shaping on their Premier accounts which was nice of them as they conveniently forgot to tell anyone after advertising that the Premier account had no traffic management one of the major reasons im on it, they finally fessed up.

Not sure i could put my hand on my heart and recommend them at the moment its now become a waiting game to see what changes they plan next without of course of informing the customer.

While looking for a new mountain bike I clicked on the picture-link for details on one (while browsing an on-line bike shop) and ended up on a VERY dodgy porn site.
Of course conversly I was browsing a soft-core porn site, clicked on a picture-link expecting to see a buxom blonde in all her glory.............

Thanks ip

Having looked at quite a few now, Eclipse seem to offer what I want i.e. uncapped 512 for £17.99, with free migration on a monthly contract.

How does this fair for speed?

Test suggests I have a decent 512 but when testing it out for real using my AOL login on the test site it sucks. I wonder if AOL have put curbs on my download.

Well ...whilst I have to agree with the above comments about Plusnet, I am still very happy with their service.

They have a good website...service calls 24/7 on 0845 low rate number..Rock solid connection...I am on Premier at £21.99, but I am sure that BB+ at £14.99 would serve my needs...i just can't be bothered to change it. ;)

Hiya, RRU
Been with Plusnet for 3 years now and you sometimes get grief when you first migrate but it's not normal, service has been good and C/S is better than most.

If you migrate to them your speed will be the maximum your line can support, none of their servicis are "capped" as such but they do use what they call "shaping".

BB plus is £14.99 P/M and very restrictive on P2P, Premier is £21.99 P/M but they have just introduced a throttle on it. At the moment there is a bit of an uproar about it going on over on adslguide.

Hope this helps.

Good morning Salvador & reset :)

Thank you for the comments. I am looking closely at Plusnet and Eclipse. Cant understand why Eclipse can offer uncapped 512 for £17.99. Not sure why their 512 flex price is also cheaper than 512 Home Broadband - Perhaps its related to them including a modem in the Home Broadband price.

Been onto AOL this morning after being promised last night at 11.45pm my connection would be sorted this morning - Its still the same.

They tried to tell me a d/l of 30kbs is correct for 512kbs - But after telling them about the BT speed test & Adslguide tests, they concur there's a problem. I am now waiting for a technician to sort it (again).

I have my mac number and feel I have some empowerment.

Can anyone tell me about Eclipse please?

Just had an email from AOL:

We are delighted that you have decided to stay on our AOL Broadband Silver package at the reduced price of £15.99 per month.

I told their I.T. Dept that I would be moving in 24hrs!

In order to take advantage of this reduced rate price plan, you will be required to enter into a new 12 months contract and to agree to the AOL Broadband Agreement, which will be presented to you when during the course of your next log-on.

They know I have the mac number. I will not sign up to another 12mths contract with these people.

Richard, if you download a lot every month I'd steer clear of plusnet. From what I've read over at adsl guide folks are seeing slow-downs at peak periods, and as I can see it things are only going to get worse as more and more folks sign up for the £15 2Mb product - and believe me there are loads signing up at the moment! In some respects you might be better off staying where you are if you if you can sort out you contention issues.

Hi Richard,

I have been with Pipex for over 3 years now, and I tend to download a lot of new linux versions every week, I have had no problems with contention issues etc., I have also recommended Pipex to a lot of my friends, who have signed up and migrated with no problems. I hope this helps

Waitrose are doing an interesting offer at the moment.. not sure about reliabilty although i can't see a supermarket in the "higher class" area being owned by John Lewis would let their name down by using sub standard net providers.

Thank you Bill & Keith :)

Keith, Waitrose have a 5gb cap which will really limit what I need to do.

Bill, I will have a look at Pipex. I have read of some concerns with their Customer Services which put me off.
