Which ISP is suitable for a heavy downloader?

This is my first post in this forum, and I would appreciate your help.

I'm looking for a broadband ISP, with a minimum 2MB speed, unlimited download, and the monthly price around 22-25 pounds per month.

I heard from a friend that nowadays, many 'unlimited download' ISPs introduced the fair usage policy, meaning they will impose the peak-time restrictions if you download things heavily. So it will be tricky if you sign up for a one-year contract, and then find out that you can be restricted.

Could you tell me whether there is any ISP which doesn't have this restriction?

My sincere thanks,

Zen Internet is the only isp's that a truely geniune UNLIMITED for 2Mb with no restriction at all. But trouble is you had to pay expensive and costy £34.99 a month.

I don't think there is any isp's that offering UNLIMITED 2Mb for around £25 or under per month.

Thank you for your prompt replies. I'm considering this Zen Internet company. Though its price is not cheap, it will be suitable if their no-limit promise is kept. I think at present, I can go for the 35£ price range, if it is truly unlimited.

Is this unlimited 2MB the best that you can get so far in England? Can you find any other unlimited 4MB or 8MB that is affordable for a home user?

Bob2002, I had contract www.core-isp.co.net and ask them many questions of the unlimited 2mb for just £26.99 a month. So here is the questions and answers below:

1) Are these 2mb are unlimited true geniune broadband ? Yes there are but not more than 640gb per month. We had many customers who downloading nearly 500gb per month and we had no complaints.

2) Ok, sound good, is that ipstream or datastream ? Ipstream as we do not use datastream or LLU

3) Is migration are free ? Yes there are free of charge but if you have no broadband - there is a set up fee of £50.

4) Are your company a private network or working together with BT central pipes ? We are with BT central pipes with ADSL nationwide exchanges.

5) Is there any restriction like eg: p2p, usenet, gaming, throttled speed or any fair usages policy ? There are no restriction but the fair usages policy is not more than 640gb per month of downloading/uploading

6) Why is your isp can afford £26.99 for up to 640gb per month as many isps don't allow this massive huge of usages ? we have extremely good peering (interconnects) with other ISP's which enables us to pass a better cost onto you

7) Is that 12 months contract or 1 month contract ? no contract but you can cancel your account any time you want, but give us a notice 30 days in advance

8) Ok, as I am with plusnet at the moment and often fed up with downloading of under 5kbs with my 2mb line - will your 2mb get any better downloading speed ? thats pretty bad - your looking around 220-260KB/s average through our broadband network with no problem

9) Finally, will your company upgrade to 8mb and do u accepted direct debit ?
we will - this will also be an uncapped service, we use only BT's exchanges for ADSL as we can offer our services nationwide rather than being patchy with LLU and no we dont, credit cards only

I find it very hard to believe it only £26.99 per month for up to 640gb per month ???? Is there anyones who use core isp - please reply if that case are TRUE ! Sound cheap to be true and cheaper than Zen Internet. I just hold my mac code for a moment - thinking of join this core isp or zen internet but I would rather pay £26.99 than the £34.99 a month.

Eclipse internet is unlimited and in your price range plus the usual static ip's to, only difference to zen is they don't go putting your name and home address in the whois info.

I had decided to join www.core-isp.net to have ago at this, if no good after 30 days, I will switch over to Zen Internet and that's was it. I will be leaving plusnet and will never go back to plusnet ever again.

Dear bulldog, I think we will deeply appreciate it if you could keep us updated. After you use coreisp, could you let us know what you think about the service, so that we can decide to follow?

Depends where your location is. If you are in a cable area, then yes. If your in an exchange with ADSL2 enabled, then yes. Otherwise no.

You dont need to have 2+ enabled in the exchange to get 8 meg normal ADSL will go upto 8 meg depending on your line.

lonely2002 - ok I will let you know how I get on with core internet service provider as I had order it today with the mac key from plusnet. So, my activation with core is not until next Monday 9th January at between 8am and 10am.

Think you need to be realistic here, no ISP can do 640GB for £25ish a month, the limit of 640GB is basically the limit 2mb can handle in any given month, its not a cap a 2mb line cant physically transfer anymore than this if it runs constant throughout!

Peering is irrelevant, very good for transit savings however if you are using 2mb 24/7 you are using the same on a BT central (seperate to transit connectivity), and believe me 2mb on a BT central costs a lot more than £25!

I know that already, as I ain't stupid of BT Central pipes network will charged isp alots of money if downloading of 640gb in a single month. But, I only do averages up to 120gb a month, but it still cheaper at £26.99 and it still 1 month contract, so I can leave at anytime if I had found this service not good. I am not going to put my hope up too high, but it the only way to find out. I had contract core isp again today before given my mac code to them as I did ask them that if I downloading up to 640gb in a single month for example, BT would charged your company alots of money for heavy usages but they replied to me, we had no problem with many customers had been downloading up to 500gb every month as we had no complaints and we had massive huge profits in our company. You can do up to 640gb every month and you will still charged at only £26.99 every month as we will not give you any warning email or letter like other isps do.

Oh well, I give it ago!

Yes it does seem rather low. What do you think of these offers which seem even better ?

Surely these very cheap uncapped ADSL products are not sustainable either - and they're from the DMC Dial homepage ( http://www.dmcdial.com/ ) !

P.S. By the way it's Mbit not mbit ...

Going back to the original Question I would say Zen definitely plus the fact they still use UK call centres or secondly Demon who are cheaper and now seem to have got over their speed problems due to over subscription but sadly have moved their support to India

Core isp are using UK call centre too. I got email from core isp, that my order had been accepted by BT and BT is now going to check my telephone line to see if it does support up to 2Mb and will let me know of my activation dates on Monday, 9th January 2006.

BT should know better, as I am currently with Plusnet on 2Mb speed. Stupid BT to check my line to see if it support this speed of 2Mb.

I'm on a 2mb service but I have been told by BT and various other ISP's my line is only suitable for 1mb(was suitable for 2mb back in July when I upgraded to that!) so either my exchange or line has deteriorated since then or the number of extra users have put my line, which may have been borderline for 2mb,outside what they class has acceptable for a 2mb now,so be warned if your in the same position you may be downgraded to a 1mb connection

Speed check is so strange .... I had logged into many isp's to check my telephone line speed as it say:

Plusnet: support up to 2mb
V21: support up to 1mb
NDO: support up to 1mb
ADSL4Less: support up to 1mb
Zen Internet: support up to 2mb
Eclipse Internet: support up to 2mb
Core Internet: support up to 2mb
Freedom2Surf: support up to 1mb

I don't really understand why is all isps are showing different support of speed line, maybe it got to do from network to BT central pipes to my exchange line.

Mmmm, Core ISP told me that my line should be able to support up to 2Mb depend on BT check on my line speed before activation my line. If it downgraded to 1Mb, then after 1 month contract - I off to Zen Internet my next isp to get my line back to 2Mb.
