Which ISP?

hi
Im lookin for some help findin a good ISP to move to. Right now im on Pipex payin about 24 quid a month for a 1mb unlimited connection which i was told was good a coupla years back but its a rip now! only thing i dont like is the price, everythin else so far is good. im just lookin for some advice on who to move to.

Not too bothered about speed, 1meg is fine for me, but faster would be good, and i want unlimited downloads, what would u lot recommend? lookin to pay 14-19 quid for a decent connection. Also, if i go for a limited service like 2GB or 15GB from Fast.co.uk, how much stuff can i do in terms of say, watchin videos on www.streetfire.net or using webcam on MSN or doing research for college? any of u people wid limited downloads watch lotsa videos or play games lots or stuff like that? how big of a limit do u think i might need?

i read some other forums, looks like lotsa people are movin from pipex, but people are still havin money taken from their account, how do i stop that happenin? would like to have made up my mind by end of this month so i can switch

sorry for the long message and thanks very much for ur help

I think you could do what ever you wanted on Fast. co. uk up to your limit 2gb or 15gb, they don't have a fair usage policy.

I was on Pipex's 1mb until Sept last year and, like you, was paying £23:49 per month. When my contract was about to expire I contacted them for my mac code but was offered a 2mb connection for £17:99 and having never had any probs with them, took it.

I download a fair amount with no probs (except the 20kb speed restriction on bit torrent but there are ways around that :o) )

My advice, if you are happy with them, is to contact Pipex and get the 2mb. Better the devil you know than the devil you dont.

hey thanks for your replies
billystevo i meant, how much stuff can i do without hitting the 2gb/15gb limit, in terms of watchin video clips through my browser for example?

i think flakeys advice makes sense, i'll just tell pipex i want to leave and ask for my MAC code, see if they give me that 2meg connection for 18 quid, may as well get that for now if they let me. cheers mate!

i did read on some other forums a few months back that they were makin that offer to ppl tryin to leave, i sent pipex a email tellin em why i cant have 2meg since my line supports it, and askin for my MAC, but all i got was "ur on a older service, u have to upgrade to a new service which will cost extra" or somethin like that, i didnt get my MAC code and after that i didnt bother to follow it up.

i'll send a email to em now.
thanks again

Bandwidth usage

If you are streaming videos etc, obviously depending how much you watch, but you could use up the 2-15GB allowance quite quickly.

For that kind of budget you could do worse than looking at an up to 8mb connection and going with an ISP who has more generous allowances. You can do an availability check on the line to see what kind of speeds you could get - but you needn't pay more than £20 for an up to 8 MB service with 30GB peak allowance and 300GB off-peak.

regards,

Rupert

i stream video and p2p download about once or twice a week files of around 1 to 1.5gb i have 3 kids who use msn messenger and youtube and bebo with streaming video flashboxes,my download monitor says i have downloaded 6gb in the last 10 days.so if i continue like such i could hit 18 -20 gb by the end of the month i wouldnt say this was high but 15gb would be highly restrictive to me look for 30gb minimum.

hello again
i called Pipex today, they offered me:
£14.99 for 15GB limited 2Mbps broadband
£17.99 for unlimited 2Mbps broadband
£19.99 for unlimited 8Mbps broadband
the guy was dead helpful, he informed me that the most i've ever downloaded in a month is 16GB, and my average is less than 10GB, and implied i may as well go for the £14.99 service, so i asked to be upgraded to that one.
i also asked him what happens if i want to cancel the connection, he told me i'll have made a new 12 month contract, so if i want to cancel i'll have 2 pay for the remaining months, but if i want to change to any other Pipex service they'll do that free, so im pretty satisfied for now, what do u guys think?
also, Nodrog can u please tell me where u got your download monitor from?

thanks for all ur help!

well done even if u go 1 or 2 gb overlimit they probably wouldnt do anything about it other than send an email asking you not to go over again.

unfortunatley they have tied u in to a 12 month contract i would have said give me the upgrade with a month 2 month contract or i might go elsewhere. there is no conection fee and u are already a customer so why do they and most other isps put in the new 12 month contract.

at least u dont have the hastle of mac codes and the slim chance of some downtime and having to let all your contacts know your new email.

Sounds like scraping the bottom of the barrel, best thing i ever did was get rid of Pipex Homecall being as polite as i can. Up for sale?
Cancel that new 12 month contract, mind you probably to them wont make any difference, find yourself an Entanet reseller you know exactly what you are getting plus the upload speeds are double that of most, better for the video.

Contract

I would have to concur about the 12 month contract. There really is no reason for a 12 month contract. Pipex have no "connection charge" to cover so to tie you in to a 12 month contract is simply unreasonable (IMHO). I would definitely go back to them at lease to get this to a rolling monthly contract.

Good luck,

Rupert

yeh maybe the 12 month thing wasnt such a good idea, but i didnt really want to change ISP anyway, pipex have given a good service so far, and now the price is competitive, so im happy. i phoned them back today but was told im in the contract now. they said every time u change package wid them, u make a new 12 month contract.
maybe it wasnt such a good idea to stay with them, but im fairly happy for now.
anyone know where i can get a download monitor from?
thanks
