Which Netgear Advice please

From Dial-up to Broadband - I have been advised by soon to be ISP to get a Netgear
DG834 ADSL - I want to have if hardwired now but have Wirless switched off but able to use later if required. only one Desk-top at present but who knows later.

I am also confused about ADSL having seen ADSL2 etc mentioned on posts and dont know what they mean - I will only be light user - about 2 Gig month - no music, films
games etc

Also when I do any Speed tests while on Dial-up will this give same if is on Broadband

Could any of you Techies out there please help me so that I will be getting set-up how I want it.

Ann

I assume you mean the ISP is offering to supply you a pre-configured Netgear DG834 or are they asking you to buy it separately from somewhere else? As a new broadband user I'd recommend, if possible, getting one pre-configured from your ISP because it saves a small learning curve with the setup routine.

However the DG834 doesn't have wireless (Wi-Fi) and for that you'd actually need the DG834G, which is a few pounds more expensive.

ADSL and ADSL2+ are essentially the broadband technology standards being used. You can find an explanation of those here:

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/broadband_DSL.php

In any case the router you've mentioned supports both.

Also when I do any Speed tests while on Dial-up will this give same if is on Broadband

Broadband is significantly faster than dialup so any speed tests should thus return a much faster/higher result.

Mark, i'm fairly sure the 834 is EOL now.

According to our Netgear account manager the WNR range is the replacement offerings.

Thanks for your help - the ISP doesnt supply - my Computer chappie getting from Wholesaler and will be setting up connection
- so can DG834G be hardwired but still have wireless ability that can be switched of for now ?

But Aquiss has said its EOL - end of line ? if so what else approx same price and quality - what is WNR and which model for hard wire with Wireless switch off for now ?

Yes it can and a lot of routers are EOL but that doesn't mean to say you can't use them anymore or that they're not sold. Most of my own routers are EOL but they're still perfectly fine and support almost all of the essential standards.

There are plenty of other routers around, just make sure that you buy one with ADSL support built in. A lot of routers, like some in NetGear's WNR range, do not have ADSL/ADSL2+ modems built-in and that can be a bit confusing for new users.

Thanks Mark for sorting confusion - when I mailed the Netgear Model to my computer chappie I inadvertently reversed DG834 to DG384 -no wonder he couldnt find it - I will ask him to get the DG834G ADSL (hardwire and Wireless switch off ) as you advised.

I will be ordering BB on Fri morning and one of the Fast.co.uk Techs is going to personally monitor my Connection - 21st Century here I come !!!!

Best of luck Silv surfer, we'll be here to help out if anything goes wrong, which hopefully it won't.
