Which programs can I let access the internet?

Just got a new PC and broadband. My antivirus and firewall is Panda Platinum. I am not sure which programs I should let access the internet, the usual ones - OE, IE etc are already set up with permission to access the internet. I installed Real Player to listen to radio on the BBC website, and now as soon as I connect Panda asks if Real Player should be allowed to access the internet. There doesn't seem any point if I am not actually using it.

Also any advise about stopping spyware etc. Will closing IE when I am not using it help?

It's quite normal for firewalls of almost any type to ask permission when a new application is installed, while others may require more direct and manual settings.

Oh and I've just realised that the spam I erased before posting this had been added to a 2004 topic.. ugh.

When your firewall asks if a program you're not familiar with should be allowed access to the Internet, just say no. But before you click that No button, make sure you have not checked the option to remember the answer--for the time being, you want to be notified each time the program tries to get through.
