Which router?

Might buy that router as well then... I'm using a couple of foreign TV iPlayer equivalents ... They used to be accessible without an issue pre-Brexit...
Since then, I am using VPN apps on my smart TV to keep them running.
Am I right in thinking that the router could configure my Surfshark VPN to be enabled only when I connect to those services (but not for other services)?
That might be more convenient than opening the app all the time.
Correct yes, note I’m using Vanilla OpenWRT not GLiNets stuff.

With PBR you can specify domains to route over certain interfaces, limit from certain lan IPs/ports etc.

Does the Flint support the VLAN on WAN settings (via PPPoE) one would need for many CF ISPs?
Think you have to set VLAN tag in switch settings too but it’s definitely doable.

How is the WiFi performance on the Flint 2? Seen tests that made it run on 1gig down and up easily on WiFi 6 - but also seen some reports that WiFi speeds are really poor?

I've not personally had any issues and think they're related to the firmware it ships with.
Got loads of devices on 2.4GHz 20MHz and it hit 100Mbps on a speedtest the one time I tested it.

I easily get my 500Mbps too over the WI-Fi, recently switched to 160MHz 5G Width as we're almost always sitting on top of the router here and I think it's done 400Mbps+ easy over 80Mhz..

I've done file transfers over Wi-Fi that exceed 800Mbps

Nice one. Are you running it with the software it shipped or did you flash it with OpenWRT? Also - is there some version of OpenWRT already preinstalled (basically as a dual boot)?

Yeah you just do a sysupgrade with new OpenWRT firmware.
Mine was running snapshots and is now on official OpenWRT, didn't bother with glinets version.

I have ordered my Flint 2 this morning from Amazon, £119.99.

Looking forward to seeing what it can do!

I think it's lazier in the sense it comes bundled with WireGuard & AdGuard Home but you can't be as intricate with it (i.e. it won't support 4G USB failover afaik without additional WRT packages).

do be aware there's currently some work ongoing in the OpenWrt project to 'fix' lowish speeds on the 2.4GHz band on this device. Regular 5GHz is full speed as usual, and on WiFi 6 is the one you'd want to use anyway tbf.
Just to be pendantic, WiFi 6 isn't a "band": it uses both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. However if you have WiFi 6E then it uses 6GHz.

Hows it going with the router? any good?
I haven't had chance to take it out of the box yet. Getting ready to move house, everything is a bit manic at the moment.

I do want to try and set it up at some point this week. My colleague has given me a Zyxel NR5103 to use until Virgin install the fiber to the house. My plan is to use the Flint2 with the Zyzel and then when Virgin come, just switch the WAN over.

What is the best way of running the Flint2 with the Zyxel providing the WAN connection? Stick the Zyxel into bridge mode? I haven't gone down the Flint2 4G failover route because the performance on both EE and Three on 4G isn't the best. 5G is good.

Well, I am using the router now, very impressed with it, quick, stable and great features.

I need to improve WiFi coverage though. I have a couple of wireless IP cameras and the routers location is in an understairs cupboard.

I could ditch the Flint and use the VM Hub 5 with WiFi discs but I really don’t want to.

Any recommendations on access points to use with the Flint2?

In China, WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 are not a band, they only operate on 2.4 and 5GHz.
So you get great hardware like the Xiaomi BE3600 and BE5000, or TP-Link BE3600 but without 6Ghz.

I got 729 down 434up on an 80mhz wide channel 5ghz from a 10th gen iPad via an Alta labs ap 6 pro if you want something to compare to.

this was to a librespeed docker container on my home server as I don’t have an internet connection that fast.

I use a asus rtx86u 2.5ghz port to my virgin hub 2.5ghz port on there 1gig plan and it's been mostly solid,I actually get 1.2ghz with it reaching 1.3 at times, there engineer was quite shocked

I bought a 6E card for my laptop and frequently max my Gig1 connection out on it now.

Router has to be running 160Mhz I have noticed though.
