Which wireless adsl modem?

Hi,

Please can someone advise on a wireless solution. I have a netgear dg834g which provides a wireless signal around my house. I have a 5 bedroom 3 storey house, but the signal can be poor\intermittent in some rooms.

I have netgear in the middle floor, which is connected to a NAS and I use pcs and macs to stream media off.

I'm thinking of either buying an adsl 2 modem with built in wireless or simply buying a wireless router - something like a netgear rangemax and plugging it into my existing router.

Please can someone advise on a solution and model?

Thx
Dan

Don't buy a DGN2000, that's all I'll say.

Mines starting playing up a bit, it's a little poor on powerline but horrific on wireless.

My DGN2000 melted !!

It depends what pci cards/dongles you are using, if they are netgear you need to avoid TPLink as the 2 do not play well together, if they are NOT Netgear, I recommend TPLink, especially as the antenna are replaceable, so you can stick 9db jobs on to improve range/quality.

I personally would not buy anything from ebuyer again, if you need to return anything under warranty they are b@stards to deal with; a DVD player I bought was doa, but they insisted on testing it and wouldnt issue a replacement or (or refund as I eventually demanded), for nearly 3 months, despite me quoting the distance selling regs at them.

Have a look at http://www.aria.co.uk/

Have you got an account on the Aria forums mate?

Got a good 3000 posts over there.

Great company to buy from.

Also, my DGN2000 has a stupid bug where it's broken in different ways for different devices.

iPhone - I find that internet pages don't load and I need to renew lease to get a connection.

PC (Powerline) - A rarer issue but still occurs occasionally, internet will just die and I get a 'local only' connection. I've tried everything, only way to fix it is to reboot the router.

Mac (Wireless) - WiFi will often drop out and then come back again a few minutes later, never use the Mac though so don't really know exactly what's broken - hate it personally, I'm a Custom PC guy myself :L

A good N Spec Wi-Fi router will help but remember that wireless networking, not matter which spec you pick, still runs into the same old problems when going through walls and any wall with chicken wire inside is going to be kill your signal no matter what spec you use.

Also your router is only half of the problem; receiving adapters ideally need to be the same make for the best performance. Some also include an antenna adapter socket that can help. Getting an adapter with a high-gain antenna already installed may help.

Furthermore if there are other Wi-Fi signals nearby and you can detect them then it can be worth making sure that you're using a different Wi-Fi channel as this may improve performance and reception.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm actually using laptops (Dell & MAC), so the power lines wouldn't be the best solution for me, plus I've heard they can be a bit flaky.

I was looking at the dgn series of netgear, but they've had some pretty bad reviews. I guess the best option would be to go for a good high quality wireless router with decent signal strength that I can plug directly into my adsl netgear wireless modem.

I'm willing to spend up to 150 quid, any recommendations on a decent router would be appreciated.

Thx
