Why Do You Use Satellite

The problem with VDSL is the frequencies used are far higher together with the potential for EMC. A twisted pair is far from an ideal carrier. There is also the problem that there is a lot of BT overhead lines these pose even more risks with VDSL.

Almost all LV power cables are underground and have a pretty effective mesh earth screen. The biggest issue with power lines is not that they are not twisted but that they are unterminated. This presented some intersting challanges in how to deal with the potential risk of emc and to achieve efficient load balancing
New techniques and filtering methods though have now removed these problem.

If they have, I'd really love to read about them. I'm totally open minded when it come to PLT, but a strong argument against it on boards.ie swayed my opinion somewhat. Don't get me wrong, I'd love PLT to get rolled out all over Europe, but interference is a huge problem. Can you imagine it'd cause with emergency services if it was left the way it is (or was)?

There is no danger of that accept under very abnormal conditions. I am sure you have probably picked up taxi or police messages on your TV now and then.

The issue as with any electronics equipment is that it produces emc they all do including ADSL. So the arguments revolve around acceptable levels. Currently Powerline is approved for use in the EU inc UK & the US. Now if there was major emc problems powerline would not have been approved. The wild claims that it will interfere with aircraft are not correct.

The argument revolves around whether it will raise the noise floor. The basic answer to that is no. The noise floor has been raised considerably by emc pollution from mobiles in any case.

The sort of signals they are talking about are very very low level and unless you were in close proximity of them such as a metre or so would be almost impossible to pick up without using a directional high gain arial.

If you were to try to use a cheap radio close to your PC that would pick up a lot of noise. You would have to do the same with Powerline to get any real interference.

Some very clever techniques have been developed to suppress EMC and considerable progress is still being made to reduce them further.

Most claims about emc problems are bases on old generation 1 kit and old reports. There is no problem with the current kit under normal conditions.

How many cases of actuall interference have you come accross?

Any and all instances of interference that I've witnessed have come from other source. That video I seen disturbed me possibly to the point of distraction.

One thing that really doesn't work in PLT technology's favour is the fact that you'll need a lot of repeaters. You can get, apparently, a maximum of 2000 feet without the need for a repeater, and this'll still be less than ADSL. A lot of infrastructural work'll be needed before anything could be fully rolled out.

You dont need to go far with Power line we are talking substation to home. The average distance from a substation to a home is under 300 metres maximum about 500 meters. You will not get a LV power feed of 6Km. You just cannot feed LV power over that distance the cables would need to be about 3" in diameter.

I'm around 6km from the nearest substation, but perhaps the Irish electrical network is different. Repeaters I guess...

Nuphor,

you probably have a mini substation in the form of a pole mounted transformer close to you.

Why Do You Use Satellite?

1) No cable in the street.
2) I'm too far from the exchange, but only just. I live in a cul-de-sac, and one of my neighbours opposite can get ADSL, but I can't! I'm hoping that the extended reach trial will bear fruit and I'll be able to ditch the sat and have a real broadband connection.
3) No wireless here either!

Pretty crap really considering this is supposed to be a built-up area!

I, to be honest, can't see power line broadband taking off in any big way. There's a major problem with it, which will soon come to light once amateur radio enthusiasts have it set up near their areas.

Since when have radio amateurs had any say ? If an amateur band is wanted for another purpose, they can say goodbye to it. Look at what they did to the 70cm band. At one time there was enough bandwidth to transmit a full-duplex colour TV signal, and still leave room for the other users. Now, it's tiny.

I'm an ex-radio-amateur myself (licence lapsed).

Unfortunately it's not just amateur radio users this affects Elmer, it affects most emergency services as well.

This thread is out of place in Silvermeads specific forums.. I will move it to the Satellite Discussion forum..

Please post in the Satellite discussion when you want to talk in general about other alternatives to Satellite.

Pay for some wireless kit, upgrade his to 2MB and share it.

Darn it, I love debates like this. They're so healthy for boards like these. Someone else come on into the conversation!

No Point, it has been discussed over and over again including this board, I reckon you search here and put your input to the respective thread. OH and by the way spend some time researching the people behind the 'complaints' of Plc including what companies they represent either directly or indirectly. Also take time out and read the 'full' recent report by the EU commission, you may see your argument in a different light. (no pun intended) :)

Your are of course entitled to you opinion, and in the right context Web Buddy and I just may join you (again ).

This thread is in the Satellite forum and it is asking do you use satellite and why?

And I will say to FJ keep up the good work, you put a lot of good effort and input into this medium the internet. ;)

oops Kitty beat me to it :)

A bit confused ??
I read whole thread before I posted it was In 'Satellite Discussion' forum, I never saw any Kitty post.? So I posted, then it appeared, odd.! Then I checked the timestamp of Kitty Post it was 09.29 am ..mine was 08:02pm...lol 11 hours difference, now I know my conection is like the railways, slow, but not that slow surely ??? :D
