Why is my BT potential maximum download speed 7x Slower than my Neighbours Potential?

If I type my home number into BT's Broadband speed test the maximum speed stated my house can receive is 1mb.

I have done the same with 4 of my neighbours houses connected to the same telegraph pole and their limit is 7mb.

My extension is 8866, and I have checked my neighbour with a 8866 extension, who gets a potential 7mb. So can't be a exchange issue?

Is BT having me on? why such a difference? Anything I can do without switching ISP's?

Cheers

If you post the line stats from your router it will be a better indication, some of the data from the line checkers isnt fantastic and shouldn't be taken as definate.

ISP Review is telling me similar: Estimated Best Speed (Kbps): 1000, LineCode: AEGEGEC

Line Statistics:
Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 1920 448
Noise Margin 13.1 dB 22.0 dB
Line Attenuation 26.0 dB 17.0 dB
Output Power 12.1 dBm 18.0 dBm

I've checked my neighbours potential speeds again on ispreview.com and they still get 6-7 times more than me. I just don't understand how the route differs between my line and my neighbours who are connected to the same telephone pylon. It cant be to do with the exchange as my speedier neighbour uses the same one.

Could it be my house caballing?

Hmm curious indeed, your router stats suggest that the line should be similar to the performance of your neighbours while BT's estimate is clearly far lower. However the linecode, assuming it is the ADSLMAX and not ADSL estimate that you posted, suggests you may have a long line with some sort of compatibility issue.

Compatibility issues can be caused by all sorts of things, such as an existing ADSL connection, pending ADSL order on line (tag), ISDN (old digital connection), DACS, TPON (BT's old fibre optic broadband system) or some alarm systems etc. Unless you can pick out one of those then it might be worth calling BT to ask for additional advice.

OK, I have done some research and have applied 3 key changes to my home wiring setup.

1. Used the master socket instead of my extended socket
2. Removed the 15m telephone extension cable that connected the socket to the router
3. Bought an I-plate and fitted it onto the master socket

Here are my stats now:

Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 6016 448
Noise Margin 10.8 dB 21.0 dB
Line Attenuation 25.5 dB 16.5 dB
Output Power 12.2 dBm 19.7 dBm

Test Results from speedtester.bt.com:

Download speedachieved during the test was - 4301 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :6016 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 5000 Kbps

A Big improvement, but still 2Mb under. Is this normal? or should I get more?

When the BT systems see the line is more stable they will lower the SNR margin, by the look of it you are on a 12db margin profile and when it lowers down to a 6db you should get another 1.5meg or so.

Yes, the real-world performance is often lower than your IP Profile. I would not be surprised if your connection speed improved over the next week.
