Why is Openreach asking me to do this?

I'm starting TalkTalk broadband on Monday, and I got this message from Openreach yesterday:

Hi it's Openreach on behalf of TalkTalk. We're looking forward to activating yout new service on 28 Feb. You won't need to be in. This is just a reminder to please plug in and power up your router on the activation day before 8am to enable us to activate your services.

I won't be able to switch on the router before 8:00 on Monday. Why does the router have to be switched on before the broadband is activated? Is the broadband not going to work properly if this isn't done.

Openreach refers me to TalkTalk, but TalkTalk don't have a clue about this. The text message came directly from Openreach.

Thanks

You don't say what type of broadband package this is (Full Fibre [FTTP] or copper/hybrid fibre (ADSL/FTTC)?

Plugging the router in enables them to test that the connection is working properly. Technically speaking, you don't need to have the router plugged in to complete the activation, but it helps. If you can't switch-on the new / chosen router before 8am on Monday, then just plug it in before that date / time and leave it.
