WiFi Calling on TalkMobile with Google Pixel 5

I've just switched from Vodafone to a SIM only deal with TalkMobile. Before I signed up, I chatted with them and they confirmed that WiFi Calling would indeed work on this specific handset. This is a dealbreaker for me as my office has terrible indoor mobile coverage. I've just got the number ported across and I do not see any option to enable WiFi Calling. I've been through the guide on their website, which actually links to Vodafone's guide for the Pixel 5. The settings in the Phone app are laid out slightly differently so I assume it's been updated since they created their guide. When I get to the "Calling Accounts" page, it just says:
Settings
Make & receive calls
Make calls with
Talkmobile
...and there's no option for WiFi Calling. I've tried updating my system software, which was already on the latest Android 13 release, and updating all of my apps. I've also tried rebooting multiple times, but to no effect.

Can anyone suggest anything else to try?
Many thanks in advance.

Appears to be an increasing problem with both WIFI Calling and VoLTE

For some MVNOs like Asda it is not instant (upto 7 days) and some have options within the online account.

I assume you have done all the usuals in addition to updates:
  • Use Airplane Mode
  • Remove and Reinsert the SIM Card (and clean)
  • Reset Network Settings
  • Try a Different Wi-Fi Network

Thanks for the reply. I've tried Airplane mode, resetting network and different WiFi networks, but to no avail.

I've just taken the SIM out and it does look a bit scratched across the contacts. Perhaps it got marked when I first tried to insert it. It seems odd that the SIM would mostly work (4G, 5G, etc) but just the WiFi calling would fail, but then again I'm no expert.

Do you have this menu option?
  1. Open the Phone app
    3uxMlSDIndQDopciRurAFnprWh1EGcvBfSzD
    .
  2. Tap More
    2cJLX70os05-e___sYyMxIa7s8NFhM1uI3_XSgtEipErjDrdEG0TusjZwZmPFaQ_488=w36-h36
    And then
    Settings.
  3. Tap Calls.
  4. Tap Wi-Fi calling. If you don't see this option, it’s because your carrier doesn’t support this feature.
I understand Talkmobile now supports 5G and WIFI Calling was introduced at the same time. As it is a Vodafone company there really shouldn't be any issues.

No. After tapping "Calls" I get three options: Calling accounts, Call forwarding, and Additional Settings.
Calling accounts lists the following:
  • Settings (which seems to be a heading rather than a clickable link)
  • Make & receive calls (same as above)
  • Make calls with
    Talkmobile
When I tap "Make calls with Talkmobile" I'm given the option of "Talkmobile" or "Ask first". There aren't any other settings that can be changed.

Talkmobile confirmed that they do support WiFi Calling on the Google Pixel 5. I made the agent double check before I ordered the SIM, and he claimed to have checked with the technical department.

I've been on a chat with them again a few minutes ago, and they've escalated it, and expect to give me more news by Monday.

Does WiFi calling work in any other handset if you have one?

I requested Lebara activate my WiFi calling you three months ago and it's still not working (Pixel 6 Pro), but not tried another phone.

Should have a full Calls menu in Settings

Another solution often posted is:
1. Dial *#*#4636#*#* on your phone’s dialer.
2. Under the Phone Info tab, check if Wi-Fi Calling is enabled.
3. If you do not see an option to enable it, your network likely doesn’t support it.

For me, I have Google phone, I guess it will be similar.
Phone -> Three Dots -> Settings -> Calling Accounts -> 3 UK -> WiFi Calling.
If this doesn't appear, I would guess it isn't supported. I haven't had any success with Talkmobile WiFi call or VoLTE.

edit:: also via settings.

I have the same issue. Under Phone Info, it shows WiFi calling as “Disabled”. Does this mean it’s available on the network but not switched on for my SIM card?

Hello, you're chatting with Mahmoud, one of Talkmobile's Help Team. How may we assist you today?
You|19:17 PM

Hi. I'm considering switching to Talkmobile. WiFi Calling is 100% vital for me. I use a Google Pixel 4a5g. I've seen claims that your WiFi Calling solution doesn't work on Pixels. Can you confirm whether or not this is the case?
Mahmoud|19:20 PM

Good evening, Stephen :) Will you please confirm android version of your phone?
You|19:20 PM

13, with January security patch
Mahmoud|19:22 PM

Was it basically 12 and upgraded to 13 or it's android 13 by default?
Mahmoud|19:23 PM

It should be working for android 13 on google pixel phones.
You|19:23 PM

Upgraded to 13
Mahmoud|19:23 PM

However, we faced some issues with phones that was upgraded from 12 to 13
You|19:24 PM

Oh, interesting. Is there a solution, or will it not work on my Pixel 4a5g then.
Mahmoud|19:26 PM

The last communication that we got is that all pixel models should be officially added by next June of this year.
You|19:28 PM

Thanks for confirming that, sounds like I should hold off from switching for now. Out of interest, is the fix coming from Google, or something that Talkmobile is providing itself?
Mahmoud|19:29 PM

That will be from Talkmobile technical team actually. However, I am not sure if it will be related to specific software update from Google or not.
Mahmoud|19:30 PM

So, most probably, it's from Talkmobile only.

@stephen.r.gunn@googlemail thanks for the news.

I'm on Lebara (another vodafone mvno) and volte/vowifi are NOT normally working on my Pixel.
However after rooting it and changing a few settings both volte and vowifi started working, so the network supports it, it's technically Google's fault, politics aside.

Is anybody else getting this new bug with the June 2024 update on the Pixel 6 that has removed 5G as an option from the "preferred network type"?

@snarpatroid has mentioned it on this thread:

Works fine on O2 - UK, I suspect it's a Vodafone issue of some sort, Pixel 6 Pro

Preferred network type on O2 showing 5G, 4G and 3G

So I used a solution provided by @snarpatroid (massive thanks!) on the Lebara thread (both MVNOs operate on the Vodafone network) to get the phone to connect to a 5G signal again.

Type: *#*#4636#*#* on your dialler to access a hidden system menu and select NR only for the 'Set preferred network type' from the list of options.

When you check the 'Preferred network type' 5G (recommended) should be displayed. If you select the option though it will still only display 4G (recommended) and 3G as the options to select. If you go back into the hidden system menu, the 'Set preferred network type' option will have changed to NR/LTE/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA

Hopefully Talkmobile and Lebara will fix this issue by next month. But in the meantime this temporary solution seems to work.

@yeehaa great I'm pleased to help, if you wouldn't mind filling in feedback (through settings and about phone) to tell Google their latest update has removed 5g as preferred network option I'm hoping the more people do it the quicker a fix :)

Done.

Lets hope someone at Google reads and acts upon the feedback with Talkmobile (Vodafone) now.

I called Talkmobile support and the person I spoke to didn't seem to grasp that this was a software issue and kept telling me that it was to do with the phone not being in a 5G reception area!!!

Despite the work around, it doesn't look like I'm connecting to 5G at all. Is anybody else having used the fix managed to get 5G back on their Pixel since the June 2024 Android update?

Have an actual Vodafone network eSIM in right now and 5G connects fine on a Pixel 6 Pro, no SA though

I suspect it's isolated to the MVNOs unfortunately
