WIFI Help

Hi All,

I have a 900/900 Truespeed connection and run a network cable from the router in the lounge to my office and into a hub which I attach my laptop, PS4 etc to. I would like to setup up a wifi box of some sort at the end on the cable instead of the hub so I can connect multiple devices. The router is too far away to be able to connect properly via wifi. Sorry if this is a daft question :)

Swap the hub for another router but with Wifi, plenty of cheap Vodafone routers on ebay and here is the youtube video on setting it up.

Your PC PS4 can still be wired into the Voda but phones etc can use the Wifi.

Actually I would suggest against the 2nd router option... Because it will introduce some additional routing delay and latency. And you run the risk of the local LAN subnets being the same either side of the 2nd router which won't be useful.

First option - Does the OP need his first router to be in the lounge, are there other devices in that location. If there isn't just plug the cable into the ONT and move the router to the office location.

2nd option would be to buy an extension WiFi unit that creates a mesh with the WiFi on the 1st router in the lounge. Or get a new router and extension WiFi unit that does do mesh WiFi network.

Third option would be for a wireless unit in the office that works in bridge mode, so it doesn't have a routing function. But this will have the drawback that as devices move between the lounge and office then they may not hand over their connection between the two units in an optimal way and be left with poor WiFi connections. This is what option 2 with a mesh network would avoid.

Fourth option is to use an old router as suggested. But as the OP is ponying up for a decent 900M symmetric connection I would guess they would want a decent experience.

If there is already a cable to a switch where you want the wifi coverage, then I would never consider mesh networking. A wired backbone is always going to be better than a wireless one.

Hence connect a wireless access point into the switch - which is your "option 3". You can get very good dedicated APs, like the Unifi AC Lite (which I think has now been superceded by the Wifi 6 Lite), with management software that lets you see which devices are associated where, signal strength to each device etc.

Handover when roaming is unlikely to be a problem, but you can always use different SSIDs if you want to force it. Or you might choose to turn off your router's wifi entirely (and perhaps have 2 or more APs from the same vendor).

As others have said, it is also possible to use an old broadband router as a wifi access point. To do this you must disable its built-in DHCP server, and change its LAN IP address to one that doesn't conflict with anything else on your network - then plug the LAN port into your switch. Your management and visibility will be poor, but it may do the job.

Agree, I also like to avoid wireless backhaul. I should have been more explicit for option 2, mesh WiFi with wired backhaul for the 2nd WiFi unit.

What’s your budget?

I would recommend using a repurposed router as as wired wireless access point. Ideal if you have an old one doing nothing. Just turn off dhcp and I would give it a static ip.
