Will adverts be the end of youtube?

Well the question is self-explanatory enough, but I'll go into a little more depth, just for you.

Ok so recently youtube unveiled it's plans to start putting adverts on the UK youtube after doing it with the US youtube, the trade off is people get paid depending on how many views there video has etc.

I'm interested to hear wether or not you think adverts will kill youtube, will you stop using youtube if adverts appear, do you think people will jump ship to the next best alternative like veoh.com?

I say that youtube will be fine through this, however my friend thinks it will be the death of youtube.

Your thoughts?

It was bound to happen as YouTube is now part of the goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooogle empire.

If people find the ads. intrusive Firefox with the Adblock Plus plugin will stop them & I'm sure other browsers would have a similar solution.

They have to fund the site somehow, so as long as they don't use those damn irritating pop-over or pop-up media/flash banners that so many other sites now force on top of the content you're reading then I won't be bothered.

I really do hate those ones that get in the way of what you're reading or appear when your mouse passes over a specific area of the page. The only reason they get clicks is from people trying to press the 'close' button, which only works half of the time.

on another note if users get paid for each view of their video this will be incentive to actually be allot more active.

That's what I said to my friend, adverts were inevitable on youtube, it wasn't a matter of if it was a matter of when it would happen, as Mark said, they have to fund themselves somehow, I believe if they use any ads it will be the ones that show a short 20-30 second clip at the beggining of a video like so many other sites, and as timeless said if users are being paid surely this is just an incentive to produce more, I can't see this as the end of youtube but I can see this getting alot more people to contribute videos.

Yes, I believe the adverts will be "tacked onto" each video. When you want to view a video, the advert plays first, then it will load the video you want to see. Some video sites I've seen already do this. You won't be able to skip the adverts, because the video won't load until after the advert has played.

This means popup blockers/advert killers simply won't work.

Not according to the BBC link in the first post...............

Those signing up to the YouTube Partner Programme, as it is called, will be offered a share of the revenue generated from advertisements that run next to their video.

I think it could work depending on how they implement it but as soon as it becomes irritating the viewers will ignore it, move on to something else and thats the end of that. You Tube will have made enough cash by then to be bothered caring anyway.

Depending on how they implement it could mean me removing all my archive material or not and that's the net's loss rather than You Tubes.

It depends how youtube are going to spend the money, if they are going to move in to doing more with the quality of the service and move forward in the media they can supply video on demand etc then I approve it, but the next few months will tell.

On a bit of a side note dont google own youtube now? and with apple bonding so much with them is it to cover costs of other ventures of the google group?

I'm with most of the others - as long as the ds aren't too intrusive the it shouldn't be a problem.

The ads that obscure the page are the worst, but also if they are going to add ads at the start of videos, they mustn't be too long.

I've noticed that Sky have started using the ads that obscure pages, although not too often so it's bearable. If they get worse I will simply stop visiting them.

That was the reason I migrated to Firefox. It was the death of MSN groups even before the firm decided to shut down its chat groups. No loss there though.

I remember when I first got Firefox.7 or .8, I don't remember which version, but the discussions were about flash or pop up blocking. It took me ages for the penny to drop.
