Will line stats change between LLU providers?

My local BT exchange has 3 options for LLU services...C&W, TalkTalk or Sky. http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/WNHR

My current ISP uses C&W LLU. I'm getting fed up of BT pestering me with their sales calls, and, as a light telephone user, would like to move to a phone calls, line rental and broadband package to reduce costs. I'm currently waiting to see what XILO will offer me when they introduce their phone services in the next few months. Meanwhile, I'm investigating my options. Which brings me to my question...

I currently have a reliable internet connection with good speeds for this area. My router sync at around 10MB and I regularly see download speeds close to 1MB/sec. Most of my work colleagues report sync speeds less than half of this from a variety of ISP's, and seem to disbelieve me when I say I get 10MB. My question is, if I moved to another LLU provider such as Sky, will my line stats be different? AFAIK, my router should still sync at the same (or better) speeds? OHMS's law would dictate that the copper wire running from my house to the BT exchange won't change between service providers, so therefore the service would not deteriorate if using the same technology.

Am I being too naive?

Sync up and down will depend on a few things but can vary a little, SNR(noisemargin) would depend on your filters for up down is the condition of the line down to you and exchange equipment.. ATTENUATION (ATT) this is distance between you and the exchange down is higher than up should not change at all....

It also depends on what the target SNR margin the profiles ont he MSAN/DSLAM are set to and what impluse noise protection is enabled.

They are about what I would expect from that line length poss a bit higher, the only reason you would see any difference is down to the equipment in the exchange and the tie pairs if they are longer or not as good quality. I would be very suprised if you saw a huge difference in sync speeds if you change provider.

Maybe...it depends who he selects and if the target downstream SNR can be tweaked. C&W target is 9db so that won't come down without one hell of a fight, however, both BT and other LLU networks are now doing profiles as low as 3dB (quality permitting) which would easily add another 1Mbps to 1.5Mbps sync.

I've seen our customer lines easily get 10Mbps on those line stats, including my own home line which is just about shy of 10Mbps at 40db line att (5.5db SNR down, INP1).

Hi,

I changed from Talktalk to Sky. I was on 13.5/14 Mbps D/L with Talktalk. Now with Sky I only get 11.45 Mbps D/L.

So if you do change ISP you may see a change, it may go up but it could also go down.

Regards Paul.

Well...so far I've had 3 independent opinions of Sky broadband from people who live near me. Not one of them has anything positive to say and it seems that the average speed is around 3Mb which is worse than they were getting on ADSL. But something even more concerning is that a friend of mine has Sky broadband and says that they are refusing to give him a MAC code. He's been asking for 8 months. So I pointed him here: http://www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/switching/new-broadband-switching-rules-from-ofcom.html.

Better the Devil you know I think...

Or here ;)

I think most of the issues from your original point have already been covered, but looking at your line stats I'd say that you are getting about the most you could expect from those. The 38db figure will give you about 10Mbps sync and maybe around 8Mbps real-world (1MB/sec if you prefer).

Performance will vary between ISPs for all sorts of reasons, although by how much is always hard to guage.

Can you not squeeze some more out of that with SNR 3/INP0? or just too unstable? :(

Matt

Is he on a bundled service? i.e if you try his number on our checker, does it come up with a red warning message? If so, he is and they can't actually provide one - he'd have to ask a gaining phone provider to "take back" or RTD the line.

He did mention that they could only cancel the line. I thought that Ofcom made it compulsory that ALL ISP's had to provide MAC codes for migration?

Sadly that's not the case. If he is on a bundled service, they have no ability to issue a MAC at this time. He would have to contact X provider and ask them to take back the line.

Bummer, looks like he's stuck with Sky for now then.

Gonna send you a XILO ticket regarding my speeds. Nothing major...just wondering if we can tweak any more out of it without affecting stability?
