Will we ever see FTTH

After reading Digital TX Examines The IPTV/VoD ISP's Debate below it made me stop and think.

Why does it take so long to sink in with BT that this is the only route to go. While other companies are comming up with different ways to provide these new types of service we are left with an already outdated system (even if you are able to get 6/7 meg speeds). You still will not be able to use these new services. Even on BT's latest system of up to 24 meg you will still be hampered.

BT's only function is to make money for the shareholders, not to make full use of the latest technology for the bebefit of everybody. BT should be taken back into Public Ownership by the Government or the Government should meet part of the costs to implement FTTH.

Failure to progress on this will have serious repercusions further down the line.

yes but they wont make any money off us doing that... tbh BT isnt a company thats run for the public its a company run to make money and fill the pockets of the share holders, they dont care we are falling behind they only care about the fact they can buy their new BMWs etc

We'll see Fibre To The Curb (or Kerb.. never sure which is the correct use) with some form of DSL technology then running into homes (VDSL2) in a few years but I doubt we will have true FTTH rolled out for a long long time. Presently there are only a few small niche suppliers doing it and it's not going to become a national product with that kind of limited cover.

To be fair it's not entirely BT's fault, the government have imposed all sorts of restrictions and fees/fines upon any company that wants to dig up the road, which is one reason why Virgin Media doesn't extend its cover anymore either.

Unless restrictions of the radio frequancies is relaxed VDSL is unable to be used to its full potential, as it stands we would only be able to get 12 meg from VDSL, BT are currently trialing FTTC with mini DSLAMS in the gren cabs in some places so it is seen as needed for the future. FTTH is only a small step past FTTC.
