From a marketting point of view gamer are suckers who can easily be persuded to part with large sums of money for the very latests bug ridden all sing & dancing graphics card which will have been carefuly optimized to show an impresive bench mark.
Most games 99.9% of them will run on any reasonable PC sold in the last 3 years. Unless someoe is in the olympic class of gaming its a waste of money upgrading

No gaming company is going to bring out a game that will only run on about 5% of PC's it would be commercial suicide. You read some reviews though they do there best to persude you you need to upgrade. Take it with a very large pinch of salt though. About 80% of PC magazines revenues come from advertising so don't trust them to give independent revues

Mine passes up near the top, and i'm no gamer, it's got an ATI 9600 in it which by now must be obsolete but it still recons it's got power in hand to play anything thrown at it.

So someone is telling porkies. either the advisor or the magazines that keep telling you to upgrade.

its made by Futuremark aka madonion as most of you will remember....

The main thing for games is shed loads of RAM...that usually compensates for a slow chip or graphics board...i found that most new games like farcry and ut2004 are unplayable on 512mb of ram, regardless of chip speed and gfx card. U really need 1GB of RAM as a minimum!! and a good defragmented 7200rpm hard drive helps with loading times

If that were true most people would not be able to play games very few have more then 512K of RAM. There is really little need for more then 512K of RAM the benefit of the additional RAM is marginal at best. Application make far more use of RAM then games. Most older PC's will not even support more then 512K of RAM.

yer farcry is PLAYABLE on 512mb RAM but im telling u it runs a hell of alot smoother in 1GB....with 512 the loading times are immense, and the game often jerks alot loading things off the hard drive.

Although if winxp didnt steal all the RAM it would probably be ok....

and as for farcry playing on a geforce 4 mx....well yes, but its gonna be 640x480 aint it

tbh u think any modern pc with DDR memory is not going to support more than 512 mb of RAM??? Even most machines with SDR memory support more than 512 mb of RAM...and as for 512k?? what are u a DOS user :P
