Winchester Powerline Broadband

I put a request in on the 24th August to receive the 1mb powerline broadband service. I received the following reply, see below:

-------------------------------------------------

Thank you for your recent enquiry on broadband from Southern Electric. We currently have broadband from Southern Electric available in some areas of Winchester.

If you are based in:

Winchester -
Your details have been passed to our design team who will review the substation connecting your home or business to our electricity network. As soon as this review is complete, we will let you know by email if your home or business can be connected to our broadband service.

Any other area -
We have updated our records to register your interest and will contact you when we can provide you with further information. Please click on this link: http://www.southern-electric.co.uk/broadband/ to visit our website for the latest information on broadband from Southern Electric. We are constantly developing this site to provide you with as much information as possible.

-------------------------------------------------

So i am basically currently awaiting to hear if im within the right area to receive it. (Im sure the fact that i am splat bang in the middle of Winchester should mean that i can!).

As soon as i have mor info on the progress to this i will post. :-)

regards,

Al.

Bump..... Still waiting!

Maybe give em a prod? Probably worth mentioning your reporting back about it all on a large internet forum...

Sounds like a plan :-)

Bump...

I did as you said and sent an email to them last week. Still waiting though.

Not exactly great customer service is it? By this point Im thinking if they are good to go with, not even having a reply letting you know whats going on.

Just out of interest, can you get adsl where you are?

That's a bit like saying Tony Bliar isn't exactly trustworthy! or retired isn't exactly forgiving!

1mbps price is good though and its symmetrical
BT 1Mbit is ₤29.99 a month and you will get a real 1Mbit, with powerline the 1Mbit is a “Specification speed” (whatever that means?).

No details on contention either so could be sharing 1Mbit with the other 51 users.

So why pay another ₤60 a year to for a “service” that is a failing experiment when there is a cornucopia of ADSL choices from 256 to 2Mbit with different contention options?

I have had ADSL and i have had NTL cable, i was intrigued by broadband over power lines and wanted to give it a go. Especially as its 1mb/1mb.

I have recently moved into my new place and currently havent ordered a BT line, if i can get broadband without one then i will. However i kind of rely on internet access and im starting to get a little fed up with waiting. If they dont get back to me fairly soon then i will probably go back to ADSL with bulldog and get the 2mb service.

The wait continues......

slightly OT here but i love that sig :D

If you get to be thirty-five and your job still involves wearing a name tag, you've probably made a serious vocational error.

Especially if you say "Do you want fries with that?" as well

Cant blame you, and its a shame for many reasons. Most of which, you would like to see what its like (as well as me), and they may have missed a good little promo chance. Still, their loss and their fault.

Powerline is 1mb both ways whereas ADSL is only 256k upload - a major advantage if you want to do a lot of uploading.

Also, there is no guarantee that ADSL provides the exact speed it is advertised as - not least due to contention ratios

Southern Electric FAQ said:
.... Our broadband service also offers lower contention ratios than other broadband providers...

Shame they don't specify their ratio :(

Another advantage, though less important for most people:

Southern Electric FAQ said:
By using the electricity network, you can connect your PC in a variety of rooms within your home by simply plugging the modem into a different electrical socket.

Plus unlimited email addresses/aliases, unlimited web page space and email scanning included. As far as I can tell, it's also uncapped.

It's not the cheapest around, but you do get quite a lot for your money.

I will try to call them tomorrow, it will be 3 weeks since my initial online request.

Ali.

One less PLC modem and the gross pollution of the radio spectrum from a bodged and failed technology.

It is clear that SSE has no idea of customer service, messing someone about for three weeks is unacceptable, imagine what they will be like once they have your direct debit form and your signature on the one year commitment.

Would anyone be able to shed light on why Southern-Electric advertise broadband in Winchester (FYI: I live in the heart of Winchester) and i receive the following email:

RE: BROADBAND - Registration of interest [#61602]

Dear Mr Ali7383 :-)

Thank you for your e-mail. I regret that our service is not yet available to you. We do not have any further information regarding the roll out of our service in your area.

We will notify you when we have any more information.

Kind regards
