right, lm contemplating putting money by for an OS upgrade.. mainly because l hear the new hard drive formats will suit a OS higher than XP better.

lve had a basic look at the following flavours
Home
Professional
Ultimate

but lm somewhat confused on certain aspects, mainly the reagion settings, you see while l have my system set to view menus etc in english l need japanese support for non-unicode programs that run in japanese based code/chars, in essence as long as l see english but can run japanese programs lm happy however l want to pick the best flavour of Win7 for the job and idealy the cheaper the better so l need to know if l go for one of the lower priced versions that l can use it how in a simular setup as l have with XP.

basically l wanna buy something thats highly useable and allows me the best access to my hardware/network settings while providing support for japanese based programs without turning the whole systems language into something l cant properly read yet

As far as I can tell from reading the blurb Pro adds ONE feature to Home; but costs twice as much..
Hence everyone buying either Home or Ultimate.

TBH I suspect the talk of new HD formats killing XP are just BS backed by M$ to get you to buy W7. You will still be able to use the older format standard, just lose alittle bit more HD space than you would using the new formats. (a few % at most)

The new HD "formats", which use a different allocation size when you format them and so should be better for modern needs with modern software, come with emulation to work on XP and other older software. This does reduce performance but, depending on the task, it's only maybe a 5-10% reduction.

As for Win7 PRO vs HOME PREM, well as Captain says there's not a lot in it but I am unfamiliar with your specific need there and how that would work. In any case character encoding is not a difference between PRO and HOME PREM that I am aware of.

PRO, unlike PREM, comes with XP Mode (virtual machine) for compatibility, domain join (i.e. for business environments) and an ability to automatically backup home and business networks. I have PRO for the domain join but I doubt you'd need that as most home users have peering networks.

yeah, as mark said the new HD formats have changed, most use 512k sectors however the new ones use 4k sectors, which l hear means like 8 times less wasted space, however l hear that the format was agreed upon after XP was released so it missed being made compatable..

l also hear that the emulation software is somewhat unstable, and that it may need 2 or 3 passes to write data, that coupled with the bugs windows XP sometimes exibits with writing lve been contemplating the upgrade, all l really need to know is that l can change the settings to suit non-unicode programs that use the japanese char set without turning the whole system into something l cant completely read much of yet.. as long as those programs run and show the chars lm happy.

useful? tho l now know what version l am going for, it told me nothing about what l was looking for... l shall be purchasing a copy of Windows 7 pro shortly, just awaiting cash to enter my account.

timeless, you wont regret going Win 7. Pro is a good OS. If I had to go out and pay retail it's what I would get. Luckily I still have MSDN so at the mo I run Ultimate coz I can. Assuming your hardware supports it deffo get 64bit.

XP x64 was rubbish, 7 x64 is excellent.

actually l went for the 32bit version but l hear the same code works for the 64bit version however its not shipped the same..

l guess if lm clever l could download the 64 bit version and use the code l have to make it legal, only problem l worried about was support and drivers tho thats just from past experienced l heard of, hopefully it should be here on monday as l paid for next day since ebuyer seem to dispatch on saturday for monday deliveries!! lm definitely looking forward to installing it (tho l hope it doesnt mess me around like XP did XD last time l formatted l ended up messing things up because another drive took the C particion, but going by what lve seen l can just format it without removing any particioning)

well if l knew someone l would have tried and went for ultimate :p however lve already purchased a copy of 32bit Win7 thismorning via Ebuyer, which should be delivered by monday according to the delivery estimate, lm really looking forward to messing around with it, as my rig requires an install... been having problems with BitDefender the last couple of days stating that for some reason its denied access to the application data folders (its done it a couple of times) then again l did have sound problems originally as well regardless l should likely be installing on tuesday.

one thing l am interested in knowing is if the same code for the 32bit version also works for the 64bit one, lm told that it does but havent had verification yet, if it does l will contemplate it for the next install once l know at which point l may just go all out with ram.. if l really thought about it at the time and went from recommendations which l sadly got after l ordered that support was unusually good considering how bad XP 64bit was supported.. lve also been told that OEM copies dont lock themselves to hardware but again lve yet to verify it.

My pre order purchase arrived with 2dvd's inside one 32bit one 64bit I am using the 32bit at present.

64Bit Win7 Pro on my main system Home Prem on my backup and Home Starter on my Netbook. All run fine, lovely OS compared to Vista.

Yep. Have done it a few times when I get someone's PC to clean install. (not due to OS issues... just the bundled crap) Couple of peepz I know bought Dell (ask me not why) and they came with 32bit. Put in 64 bit with code on PC. All works fine.

just want to verify that the OEM code for the 32bit version l received works on the 64bit version as well, l downloaded the 46bit version a couple of days back and now have it installed.. windows 7 is taking some getting used to :p

You'll soon get over XP. Win 7 really is very nice. The only throwback to the old OS I use is Quick Launch. Prefer it to the new style. (How to Guide)

yeah l was thinking the same thing, l really prefered the old style start menu and quick launch...

however l have worked out how to pin the stuff l liked to the task bar, also l did have an issue with winamp only playing through my front speakers.. l have since found a plugin that sorts the issue, am more than happy to post the link later if anyone is interested, the only other issue l had wasnt really an issue.. it sounded like l had random DVD drive access but it seems there was a sleep feature for my HDs and the sound l was hearing were them spinning up (weirded me out for a while until l worked out where the setting was to disable it)

gimme some time tho and l will get used to things, for the moment tho everything seems new and weird however in response to the 64bit installation l mentioned, lve not had any driver problems everything l usually run seems to work ok even tho some are not 64bit coded programs.. regardless so far my experience hasnt been too bad, tho at a later date lm likely to go wild with ram ^_^
