Windows 98

Dear members

I was given an old computer and I tried to install my own copy of Windows 98 which I would like to re-use.

After running this disk I recieved this message.

WINDOWS 98 CD-ROM

This CD-ROM is from an older version of Windows than the one you are presently using. Set up functionality from this disk will be disabled.

I would still like to use my own disk although I realise it will be the older version of Window 98, please could anybody tell me how to un-install the current version that is on this computer and re-install my own disk.

Many thanks for anybody who might be able to help.

regards

Assuming the PC boots up into its current version of Win98, go to the Start button, select shut down computer and select Dos mode.

The PC will now shutdown and restart into dos mode, this is just a blank screen with a text entry line which starts c:>

type in format c: and then press return, agree to all the warnings about losing all your data and it will format the drive.

Do a reboot using the reset button to make sure all is ok and then use your CD to install Win98

Did this "old" computer come with its own windows 98 CD and Licence Key?? if so the licence for it should be valid and a reinstall would be pointless, however if it didnt here's a site showing you how :) Link Here

good luck :)

Does he not have to do a boot disk? Unless boot from CD is available in the BIOS I guess.

Hi members

I have typed in format:c and pressed return, agreed to all warnings and I have now received this info.

Volume label (11characters) Enter for none)? I pressed enter

this was the next message that I got

4,102,31mb total disk space
4,102,31mb available on disk

4,096 bytes in each allocation unit
1,050,191 allocation units available on disk

Volume serial number is 252F-1BFF

C:\>
C:\>

Please could anybody advise as to what I do now?

I hope to god that the bios allows you to boot from cdrom.
I think people have been a bit forward with telling you how to format witout checking that first.

He does have another working PC to post on here, so I guess he should be okay. I've sent the link to a mate of mine who is wanting to do the same thing.

please note the start of the walkthrough on how to reformat reinstall windows 98  *sigh*

What you will require to do this walkthrough is

A Windows 98 CD

A Windows 98 Floppy Boot Disk

A Computer with CD-ROM access

To start this Windows install. First check that the first boot device in your system BIOS is set to the Floppy Drive.

( To find out how to access the BIOS please refer to your motherboard manual or the manufacturer of your computer. (The system bios can usually be entered on boot, usually by pressing the F1, F2, F8, F10 or DEL key. Make sure you save the settings before exiting))

If you are unsure or don't want to enter the BIOS then just test the computer by putting the CD-ROM and floppy disk in their drives and reboot the computer.

You will know that your computer will/has booted of CD-ROM when the following screen appears

it does state "boot from startup disk" I never said however "format the drive"

Looking through the walkthrough myself, why on earth is he/she copying the setup files to the hard drive  it can be installed from CD  no need to do that

Too lat now but on w98 cd if you go in to windows folder on cd(explore disc after aborting set-up)you will find a 2nd set-up exe which normally allows you to reinstall even over newer products
